I've noticed that there is a little silver blade near the "N" on my 80mm, and I have seen other lenses without this extra bit. Are there different versions? Any idea what I'm looking at?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Yes, there's the tip of a shutter blade that looks as if it doesn't belong there. But it's not really that obvious to the casual look-see ... you need to look carefully in order to notice it. So if you're saying you'd seen other lenses without it, I guess you just didn't look carefully enough to notice. I haven't noticed until now. Anyway, my lens is working just fine.
By the way, there's a similar ... err, apparent 'glitch' in the shutter blades of the N 150 mm L lens. There, it's more obvious than in the N 80 mm L. I was worried at first (after purchasing the lens used from a private seller). But that lens is working fine. And in pictures of other copies of the N 150 mm L lens on Google Images, it's just the same.
So—don't worry and keep shooting the heck out of your lens
