Mamiya 7 Blank Frame Problem.

Hey guys,

I recently bought a Mamiya 7 with 80mm lens.

The first few rolls I shot came out fine.

However, today I shot two rolls, with the first roll coming out completely blank and the second with the first three frames blank and the following seven fine.

I just shot another roll at home and it seems to be working again with 10 images appearing.

Can anyone explain why it stopped working for 13 frames then started working again?

And before anyone asks, the lens cap was off and the light shield curtain was open 😉

Camera wouldn't fire with the lens swap curtain closed anyway. 😀


Did you hear the shutter?
Are you using auto exposure?

that is desperately depressing: I love this camera, and the idea that any one of its beautiful lenses could give up on me at any time without notice and no warning is well ... depressing.

how often does this happen? is it like the leica minilux E02 problem - inevitable? does this mean that all the kit I have bought for this wonderful camera is at some indeterminate point doomed?

Yeah I was going for the old flex cable problem with my inquiry.

I'd love to get my hands on those FPCs!! If anyone knows a supplier. I repaired my 65 with a copper wire since it only had a crack in the last line for the aperture readout which always seems to be the problem - hence my question for the auto exposure. (My lens is in the classifieds - I want to move to the 50mm.)
I asked Mamiya germany and they told me that they would need to swap the whole shutter assembly.

Other lenses/cameras have the same problems with moving cables too. It seems as if the one in the 65mm especially is a wee bit to short, pulling just a tiny bit to hefty when focused close. Maybe Mamiya solved that in newer lens productions

Beedubs: The only problem I ever had with my 7II was caused by the lens and not the body. I did get some blank frames. It took one picture and after that I got blanks. After several blanks I recognized the shutter wasn't firing--hard to notice, since the shutter is so quiet--so I changed lenses, and the camera started working fine.

I suggest trying a different lens if one is available, to see if the camera will work then. If not, I would send it all back, to be on the safe side. But I'm pretty sure it's the lens that needs repair.
