Man Attacked in SF for Photographing Accident

So much anger end resentment in this world over issues that really pale into insignificance when compared to things that really matter ... that will effect all of humanity ultimately! 🙁

Yep....

By the time the video was being shot, this was no longer a conflict about taking photographs. It was about four dumb a--holes going at it because... well.... because... 'CAUSE!!!!! So's your mamma!!!!

Lots of unknowns in the situation. But I do know this- you get into it with people on the street, and you tell a guy that he needs to get his girl out of your face (go ahead, parse the levels of sexism and condescension in that) when it is the woman doing most of the yelling? You do that and you have just kicked the hornets' nest, so be prepared.

Honestly I just do not see how you expect us to see this as anything but an endorsement of violence.

What if the blow to his throat had killed him, would the "lesson" been more clearly delivered?

First of all, speak for your self only, not "us", ok?

If the blow had killed him, then we would have a different discussion at hand, right? So why the speculation that attempts to make me out to be the bad guy when that is not the case?

This is a life experience that happened to 4 people and they are all alive, all have choices to make in going forward so therefore there are lessons to be learned by all.

My saying that the person with the camera has *hopefully* learned a valuable set of lessons from this is not in any way shape or form me condoning violence as a way to "teach" him a lesson, ok? Maybe he did not learn a thing and will place all blame solely on the 3 punks? More needless speculation...

Either way, I really don't appreciate you implying I condone violence, so you can stop doing that right now, end of discussion.

And speaking of the discussion, I'm done with this topic, to add anything beyond this point would do no good.

+1.

The OP is once again stirring the pot with some overblown, one sided argumentation that is based on what ?... a partial video of events with no actual audio recording to document what the verbal confrontation was about.
The video doesn't show a photographer shooting a scene and getting beaten up. The video shows a guy without a camera (or did I miss it?) who argues with two women and a guy who actually at one point holds back one of the women. The supposed photographer says something that obviously brings the situation to a boil.

The way I see it, this is not he got beaten up for taking pictures but for stupidly escalating a situation in a verbal confrontation afterwards.

No doubt about the thug attacking him physically is wrong and was rightfully arrested along with his female companions.

There are numerous comments about how to react in such a situation to deescalate it instead of going in full frontal and have a bad out come for everybody.

I guess deescalation is something that is missing in a lot of situations today. There is ALWAYS the option to step back or aside. People getting killed in the course of events of a traffic stop because of a broken tail light and later the argument of the officer "I felt a thread for my life I had to shoot". How about some deescalation 101(i.e. for beginners) training instead of the shooting range?

For some of us, it is hard to walk away due to lack of emotional intelligence. You'll never understand if you can walk away. We know it is the right thing to do, but it's not always easy to do.

I think that is why I find this thread unsettling, my own lack of good sense.

But at my age (and I don't really look ancient) a blow to the neck might very easily kill me. A fall to the ground is often dangerous for anyone over 65.

I agree though... I've been trying harder to be better (and I am succeeding more often these days). I find it is a lot easier when faced with what is perceived to be a genuine threat. I become humble quickly in those situations.

As far as photographing on the street, I am all for the fact that I have the right to do so. However, I also try to understand that the other side has no clue as to my intentions and has every right to question why I am doing it. But only as long as I am photographing something that is associated with them in some way (whether it be family, job, belongings, self, etc). I never understand the vigilante types who feel it is their right to hassle me for photographing something they are not involved in or associated with. That said, I generally don't photograph questionable situations and try not to show people in a bad light.

I'm still amazed and a bit stunned when people on a photography forum express a blatantly anti-photography point of view. Your point of view is distinctly anti-photography.

Photography, from the greek "photos" light and "graphe" to draw, meaning "to draw with light". Forgive me but I fail to see how my comment is in anyway "anti-photography".

Have a good day 🙂

Explained it above. In my opinion, people who perceive photography as a harmful, suspicious or criminal activity worthy of "calling the cops" are anti-photography.

I still can't understand why one of two arrested women is smiling, as if all of this was just a funny day.

Agree. Some people have a very twisted sense of humor.

None of this would have happened if the dood used a Rolleiflex instead of cameraphone.

Everyone wants their pic taken when they see a Rolleiflex.

And here is the drill why she was smiling.

According to other official statistics some of Vancouver (BC) permanent residents have arrest warrant for marijuana trafficking in USA.
Some of the cannabis apartment farmers in Vancouver have strange English. As result they sold double straight ones but they told to buyers it is "twice" and showed two joints while pointing at double strength one.

Apparently tourists group of american photographers was involved with purchasing. One left to Canadian Rockies and smoked two (two doubles). As result during his attent to take landscape picture with digital camera he has illusion of two Ansels Adams with two folding cameras yelling profanities at him as user of digital.

Another, while in the States, after smoking of two doubles went to Museum to demand to photograph Giant Red Skull, which he remember to photograph twenty years ago (after taking some fanny pills). The incident is documented on P.O.T.N. and Pekka (forum owner) has to close it within 24 hours after OP at eleventh page due to inflated debates, after which marihuana the skull is reddish and after which one the smoker skull is more giant, Canadian or Mexican cannabis.

And third consumers of wrongly described marihuana were three lomographers in SF video, who have smoked those double pots and shortly after it started arguing with DSLR photog taking pictures on accident scene. According to those three smoked lomographers this DSLR guy supposed to take pictures from the hip and without thinking.
And as you might know smiling without reason is one of the side effects of marijuana consumption.

Let it smoke, let is smoke, let it smoke,
Ko.

She probably knows that the San Francisco police department runs a catch and release system. Nothing is going to happen to her from the criminal justice system. An hour here or there over the next year, that's about it.

And she has a new story to tell her friends at the bar. Whoo-hoo!!

If we can just agree that, in the 21st century, it's almost always the victim's fault, we can end this argument. If not, perhaps we can indulge in some situational morality - if I don't like what the other guy's doing, I have the right to smack him. Then we can all go home.

Agreed, with one proviso: He who smacks the one who bothers him confers upon the smacked the right to slash or stab him in justified retaliation and surrenders all claim to due process.

Now we can all go home. 😛

How are you sure this young person was an "Orwellian" ? Not all young people are nerds or dumb individuals. The photo he took might have been good. And in the hands of someone having an eyesight, an iPhone can be a good photographic tool.

Photos of people looking at roadmaps can be interesting. I took this one a few years ago. Not using an iPhone and using a Rolleiflex, but an iPhone would have done it too.

Very nice photo. I can assure you that I look nothing like this young lady.
Perhaps I should have inquired if the lens on his iPhone was still intact after the picture was taken!?

People forget this too easily. HCB had respect for people but it was a lot closer to a "white man's burden" sentiment than most people would care to admit. Not just around non-whites mind you, but around everyone. That changed as he spent more time around people, after the war, but I never got the feeling from his writings, or his pictures, that he really felt 'on the same level' as most other folks.

Take your meds.

Sorry, I ascribe to the theory "there is no health care system", much like "there is no spoon".

I agree it is a beautiful not a nice place, when you've crawled over the homeless, the druggies, and the panhandlers, you will finally get to see it. Just go to a Giants or Forty-Niners game. Or try to walk from Davies Hall to your car, the losers know when the concert is over (the Chronicle publishes it for them)(Oh, it's 3:45 PM I have to get to the Hall to scam) and are always there. We have, I hope had, a program where people could donate their small amounts left on their BART (rapid transit) cards so the homeless can sleep on the BART trains. I don't need to tell you what the bathrooms at the stations look like or the condition of the cars, let alone a homeless sleeping on two seats so the un-subsidized have to stand. Another rule in SF is don't leave a restaurant with a doggie bag, it is almost a criminal offense in 'The City' to refuse to give it to a beggar.

Also, I think now Juarez is safer than 98th Ave. in Oakland.

Again with the crawling over, and the ever expanding list of undesirable types.

I've been to Giants games and Athletics home games, I didn't experience anything but a ton of people having a good time at either.

I was out at night photographing in both Oakland and SF during the Warriors street parties during game 5 of the NBA finals in 2015. (for the record Oakland handled it WAY better than SF, who brought out riot police in The Mission for absolutely no reason).

My favorite Banh Mi place is in the Tenderloin, I suspect it pulls in a different clientele to Davies Hall, and yet, I've never had a problem at all

The condition of Bart cars is...not that bad at all for a major metropolitan city, I've certainly seen much worse, and if you have to stand so someone without a home can get some sheltered, safe rest, then I don't really think that's much of a hardship, but then again I don't refer to those less fortunate than me as "losers", and with "a homeless" you missed the word "person".

Doggy Bag wise, I'm not sure I've ever done it, but I've bought people food, and sat and eaten together with them, they're people.

Most people are a couple of bad months away from being in the same kind of situation, that might not be something you can identify with, but don't dehumanize them.

Essentially, our different approaches mean that I don't spend my time in The City in some kind of disdain heavy fearful flap, and I seem to have a better time there.
