Are there any users of Manfrotto 055Pro and/or 141rc2 head? I am looking for sturdy tripod (able to hold OM4ti with tamron 300mm f2.8). I know spec - I am looking for personal experience on how good/bad this combo handles. Thanks in advance!

I have an older version of the 055 legs and they are fine. The head has been replaced with a newer model.

How do plan to use the tripod head? A 3-way head is great for slow deliberate work like landscapes or macro. A ball head is better for fast action like wildlife, sports, etc. I recently had to make the choice of a new head. I do all of the above types of photographs. I picked a ball head. Better for wildlife and acceptable for landscapes & macro.

I have used an older model 055 with a 300/2.8 lens and was satisfied with it. Another head you may want to look at is the Long Lens Monopod Bracket by Manfrotto. It is interesting and a little bulky but works well on my tripod.

That combination should be fine with that lens, I use a old 055 and 029 head - rock steady, have used with a Canon 100-400 on a (cough) DSLR, effective magnification similar to a 600mm lens. Fine on a normal day, don't know how well it would stand up to blustery wind though.
I know my OM looks tiny perched atop it

depends on your size.
i am just average tall (178cm), and the 055 works nice - i assume, it will do so if you are not more than 185cm.
if you are taller, maybe it's better to chose an even taller tripod than the 055 is ... better try out first.
oh, and consider the weight. a tripod you do not have with you because it's too heavy to carry around is just like no tripod at all
cheers,
sebastian

You are right, for sure. I don't want to drag 3kg of additional weight when I travel light (I use olympus gear for travel light ), so I have another "flimsy" 'pod that weights 1/4 of Manfrotto and can handle 90% of my needs. Manfrotto will be dedicated to heavy tamron 300mm, I guess.
