Manual focus DSIV

I have a DSIV and really like the scanner. I wonder why someone needs the manual focus setting. Or automatic focus setting......?Do you only need this for old negatives?

I dont use it and I am happy with the results...or can I improve my scans?

There may be some variation in thickness of films, that may require a slight adjustment of focus to get the last bit of resolution out of a scan.

I use a Minolta 5400 and auto focus. I look at the prescan image and then select a new auto focus point on an edge where there is high contrst between two areas that are slightly off the centre of the long side of the neg. I do another prescan and find that the sharpness generally but not always improves. When I am satisfied then I do the final scan. I have always attributed having to do this extra step with the negs being slightly curved and not 100% flat. Instead of using a new auto focus point you could manually refocus but I am lazy.
