Mapping the Freestyle Discount Films

I just bought some FUN40036 at B&H for $4.50 a roll.
Freestyle is $5.09

And, I did not see any Legacy of any kind (I was looking for Legacy Pro 400)... So Fuji Neopan 400 is my next favorite 400 of a old-school grain film.

And yes, the Stock Number for Fuji Neopan 400 36x is FUN40036 😛
 
Bought 10 rolls of Arista Premium 400. When looking at Reciprocity Failure, should I count this stuff as a Kodak film - considering it is re-branded TriX?

I ask because for school we have been assigned to do low light shooting and I have a chart with Indicated Exposure time compared to PanF, FP-4, Afga25 Afga100, HP-5 and Kodak time (So indicated time is to be 1 second = 2 seconds for Kodak films).

A few questions.....

What kind of base does this have? is it thick enough not to curl after drying? Like HP5, Delta 400, Tr-X?

Do you guys/gals that use it, like the results in Rodinal (Standard Develop, not stand)?

Grain Wise... Tri-X like or Delta 400 like.

I am trying tighten my film budget a bit, maybe, I get a roll or 2 more if I can save a few bucks per roll.

If I read correctly, only 2 (or 3) alternatives for Kodak films are still available from Freestyle. Is there another thread with other films and their corresponding cheaper alternatives?

Hi,
I see most low cost b&w films offered by Freestyle are now Arista Edu Ultra... I tried to find here on rff some clear, present day information on them but I couldn't...
Maybe some forum members can share recent findings...
Are all of them, 100, 200 and 400, 35mm and 120, the same film? Which film or films? Traditional grain? Any other comments?

From what I gathered, consensus around here is that the arista edu ultra films are all foma equivalents. Chris Crawford swore by the 100 being identical. I have used a lot of the 100 in caffenol and it is an excellent film.

I use Rodinal only... Any Arista Edu Ultra / Rodinal users?
I like crisp grain, and I like pushing, and I don't care about some speed loss...
Reasons for picking 100, 200 or 400 in both formats? Curling?

I don't have any knowledge or experience with the 100 and 400 but the Ultra 200/ Fomapan 200 in 35mm is very nice and it dries more flat than any other film that I use.
I have read that the 120 version curls like there is no tomorrow.

The Ultra 200 has a very unique look and processed right have a nice long gray scale. All 3 of these Foma film need less development than most other film and contrast increase pretty fast with overdevelopment.

I shot a couple rolls of the 400, developed in caffenol but was not very pleased with the results. Everything looked very blah. I'm sure others get better results. Do a google image search for "Fomapan 400" and you'll find a lot of interesting (some nsfw!) samples.
 
In the past few months some "new" Arista films have appeared. Arista EDU DX 100 and Arista EDU DX 400. I haven't used them, but apparently the boxes say they're made in England. Rebadged Kentmere possibly?

Pricing is almost the same and most humorously (humoursly?) they have the DX on the Kentmere page as well)

Looks like a fair bit of the Ultra is on clearance though... 🙁

stopped using arista label years ago. I wasnt too fond of using a roll of "400" iso film, and having the funky negatives have 100 or 200 on the edge label..

Same with the arista darkroom paper.. I have had not such great luck with it. it was getting very common to find half a package of matte paper to be glossy.. Sure the package i am using now, after my 2 year break from printing to be the same throughout.. but with how things are who can tell what the next package will turn out to be.

But then again, I have had the funky foma film edge markings before. I guess there was a batch 3? years ago where lots of users were getting foma edge markings in arista label containers, and vice versa.
 
I hate to open this thread as I am forced to read the original post - and see the great films listed, once sold under the Arista name.

Today I would be interested in the Arista films only if I were using ten rolls a week and saving a few cents per roll mattered.
For my occasional use I'd rather pay a little more for a known quantity, i.e. the name brand film.

Still got a pile in the fridge. The Foma rebadge was never a bad product in my experience but these days I'm much more inclined to shoot XP2 and have a lab dunk and scan it. And I can buy 100' of it from Ilford as easily as I used to buy PlusX bulk so, eh, why not?
 
Back in the day when Arista was repackaging Fuji I bought several hundred rolls of both 100 and 400 in 35 and 120. I bought a small freezer to keep it in and finally have run out of the 100iso 120. Freestyle at the time had it on sale for $2 and change per roll.

Since I’ve bought some of the new Acros that was short dated and stuck it in my freezer. Unfortunately the price has gone up substantially.
 
dependign on where you buy, Arista labl canactually be as expensive and sometimes more expensive then Ilford film. Hence, i have been using ILFORD.

its bad when a 36 exposure roll of HP5 Plus, in a 10 pack purchase, costs less.

100' spools arista label cost 79$ plus tax and delivery on amazon. And a 10 pack of arista 400 iso 24 exposure rolls costs 73$ plus tax n shipping.

a 10 pack of ilford hp5+ has gone UP to 91$ plus shipping and handling, and 36 exposure rolls.
