Last week I recieved delivery of a repo shutter guard that is nickel plated. Something like $12.00 on EBAY shipped from Japan.

I also got a Chinese Knock-off black "Leica" lens cap to protect the 50 Elmar. The lens cap is not so exact reproduction, but for $7.99 I'm not going to complain.

On the Chinese lens cap I noticed right away hoe the word Leica was not so centered. Basically like a shot with an ultrawide is has too much empty foreground if you know what I mean, but only camera nerds would notice.

BTW I sanitized both with an alcohol prep.

I showed "Maggie" how I could literally carry the Leica III in a jeans pocket. Of course Maggie saw no merit or did not think it was cool. LOL.

Cal the black swan already arrived here. In spite of what happened in China no plan was made. You only realize what happens and how quick it can spread out, like an explosion whern you see it happening near you. My wife and I as well didn't think it could be so dramatic in a few days...

Many thanks.

We are living in history. I can fortunately say that I'm in a good place. Both Maggie and I don't have any underlying conditions that might compound things.

It is fortunate that we also have a huge position in cash, which I think the smart money is hoarding to prepare for the big drop yet to come. I don't see how this could not cause a world recession.

In the foolish family senario I mentioned above, I wish it was fiction, but it is a true story of how an educated, privelaged family of means did not take this emergency seriously.

I hope for the best, but then again this could get mighty ugly with many deaths.

Maggie professionally is a PhD Social Worker. She refrained from visiting her mother who is 94 and in a nursing home. Basically she vistits every week, but choose a while back not to visit because of all of her travels. This was weeks before nursing homes implemented "lock-downs."

If she were selfish, not thoughtful and foolish or had a casual attitude she could of put many lives in danger.

It seems my boss is protecting me, but my only risk is being over 60. I have no underlying conditions that would compound Corona Virus.

When I was flying back from home a couple months ago I was ready for a lot of changes and a possibly hard year. If I had known what were to come, and what is left...

I like to say that in the chaos and different policies, whatever happens, that will be the ultimate judge.

I had a day's worth of flu like symptoms yesterday, which have subsided and thankfully gone. Went into quarantine automatically and it's hard to trace where I could've gotten it.

The last person I talked to had the same flu, with a day earlier onset.
The virus itself, as long as doesn't develop complications shouldn't be a problem. I am 25 and without conditions, more worried about having been an asymptomatic carrier and my lifestyle involves different locations and meeting people. This is an interesting discussion, as the danger is there before actual measures are implemented. If I had stayed in home for the whole month, I'd probably hadn't gotten this "flu". But could not cancel unilaterally the things in calendar...

I'll not know if a flu or covid was what I've had, as testing is very limited. We were told basically the generic advice of stay at home and quarantine. Policy wise, South Korea seems to have taken the best course of action, testing everyone. With extensive testing the disease can be effectively traced.

2020, what a year and beginning of the decade. Interesting that this black swan is being the start of that presumed recession.

One of the first thing I said my wife early in the beginning is that for sure after this we'll be much more poorer...poor and alive still good ...

... a friend of mine said it is like to be in science fiction movie but knowing it is not a fiction, if anything wrong no option to rewind and play again...

The tsunami is coming in the US. We will all be losing people we know to this, it is not a question of if but a question of how many. Please stay home as much as possible.

This. Wise suggestion. Stay home so much as possible. You have no idea when it starts in a crowded area how quick it goes. lt seems to be far, only a few cases...but it is not so far away...

Not to scare you but we all need to act very carefully...

Our experience is that even listening to the news in the beginning it seems to be something about other people...other places...maybe it is an instinctive reatcion not to accept it, a few days before the spread in north Italy we had never thoght it could come to our town...crazy, I know now but we were going to go to a theater...they changed the movie and because we had already seen the new one we stayed home...maybe a life saving decision.

I say this in the hope our experience can help others: do not panic and act with logic. Follow the instructions wash hands and all what everybody alreaady knows.
 
Heads up: I likely will be off-line for considerable time. Here at the two NYC hospitals where I work, pretty much I'm going to be paid to stay home as my work is considered "elective" being research.

The update on the "Foolish Family" is that the husband with symptoms got tested yesterday. The news reports that in Westchester it may take a few days to get results. Also know the word was that first two tests will be run to find out if the illness is due to flu, and not Corona Virus.

If these two tests come back negative, then a Corona Virus test will be performed. What does this mean? Is it wise conservation of precious resources? Is this really telling us that we don't have ample testing? Is this to gather data and a good research method as to not waste resources?

Know that an e-mail came out today where all research programs at my hospital are suspended until further notice. I'm not the only medical worker being paid to stay home on paid leave.

Last night I watched 20/20 and they reported that Italy has 4 medical doctors per 1,000 people, a much higher proportion than in the U.S. where we only have 2.6 medical doctors per 1,000 citizens.

Yesterday I had to go 4 different supermarkets to secure a supply of bread. I saw empty shelves. At Fairway on the Upper Eastside only a few boxes of pasta.

On the street many restaurants simply put up signs that they will close for a month, rather than become take out or pick-up only. I suspect that many of these will close permanently.

It is apparent to me that it is expected that eventually the hospitals expect to get overwelmed like in Italy. We are preparing for the worst, but also know there is inadiquit testing and a delayed response by governments (state and Federal).

LOL, three days later, this comment aged like milk. I hear they're considering implementing curfews like NJ. Stay safe, New Yorkers. It might be safest to put off meetups for the next few months until life returns to normal...
 
On Sunday we ventured outside and took a 15min walk to visit some friends who just got a puppy. We've been laying low and only going out for walks in the sun and necessities only. We noticed though that bars and restaurants in Brooklyn were packed as if everything was normal. We met the puppy, and were appropriately cautious, and elbow bumped etc. The boyfriend works at a camera rental place and described how all movie/still shoots are being cancelled, and how everyone is paranoid about touching equipment that is being returned.
Yesterday we got a text from them saying that a co-worker at the rental place tested positive. So now we are going to be staying home for a while. No more casual visits.

Or, if you're in the Denver area and are brave enough to venture out (we've got a blizzard raging today), we'll toss you a roll from a safe distance.

Limit is one roll per customer. Please don't try and order more. If we still have a bunch left in a few weeks, we'll revisit that policy. .

FOOLISH FAMILY UPDATE: The husband tested positive. After this the rest of the family got tested. About a 3-4 day delay for results in Westchester County.

So far the wife and two younger kids all came back negative. The two college students results are not back.

I came to work today to check the schedule. My paid leave continues...

I'm staying in and dreaming up all kinds of camera projects. I just sent some files off to be laser cut in aluminum. Amongst other things I designed some parts to fit that 6x18 torpedo camera back onto one of my linhof hacks. I'm trying to design a winder knob that includes a frame counter that can be 3d printed.
Being productive is keeping me out of trouble.
 
To my NYC friends, stay home and stay healthy. It’s a lot better here in Chile, but we are still going into a mandatory quarantine tonight for at least a week... and that’s with only 3 deaths in the country. My wife and I just had a kid two weeks ago, so we’ve been self quarantining already. This is no joke and one of our close RFF NYC friends likely has this virus... he’s been very sick for 9 days.
