When Df was released I had even sent Nikon feedback on what the Df should have been. I am sure they listen to every random feedback they get 🙂

Anyways I would even go as far as to remove the AF module in order to make it more compact, as any modern Luddite would want.

I thought the Df was ridiculous when it came out because I had unrealistic expectations of a digital FM2. Once I accepted the Df for what it was, I've never been happier using a DSLR.

I think that a digital camera without a screen is absurd. I understand that they want to attract the film diehards but really! I agree with several others that an ISO dial would be a handy addition.

If you shoot RAW only (and the equal absurdity of non-shooting RAW with an high-end digital camera hasn't to be demonstrated any more) and don't shoot like a machine-gun hoping that at least one off fifty pictures will be interesting + well focused + well exposed, you don't need any screen.

Once in Tuscany for a week with my D700 (NEF at base ISO and manual focusing only), I never looked at the screen and looked at the photos on a good monitor when back home. That made me save time to look at what was around me, which was more beautiful than my camera screen.

When you've got a good picture, you know it. Looking at it on a screen half the size of a postcard isn't that useful. Even if the histogram isn't perfect you cannot re-take it (unless you're shooting still lifes or something). The only thing the screen will make you do is to delete pictures which you may very well regret a bit later.

Leica doesn't do volume well (when compared to Nikon, Sony, Canon, etc. )... and it goes against its luxury brand status.

But..
If they priced it in the actual...sane realm of pricing reality...so more people could actually get their hands on one..they would still make money on the lenses..and maybe return to their roots..with more people using them..
I can dream cant I...hahaha!

If they priced it at $3500 they would just collect backorders, and then customers would be pissed when their order takes a year to ship. Leica has never learned how to manufacture for volume. If they did, they *could* sell it at that price, or even less...

But I see absolutely no point to the same big fat M262 just sans an LCD...

Isn't ISO wheel already on the back instead of the screen?

It is Leica getting smart and realizing what they are capable of in digital environment. Look at their M8 where screen has several issues and can't be replaced for some time now. With this model Leica is free of this kind of issues. And greasy nose guys like me have bright future ahead of us!
I might be able afford just M8 later on this year. Which is 2006 model.
So, this, no screen M, is in my gear list for ten years from now! 😀

The camera could appeal to both philosophies by making the screen reversible, like on the RD-1. If you don't need to see it, you could turn it around. Then when you need it, it will be there.

The M-262 has a very good data stream. While some brands have better technologies, I doubt the M-262's level of analog signal-to-noise ratio/dynamic range is any sort of handicap. Of course, for a small number of people a 2/3 to 1 stop improvement is a practical advantage.

I think Leica is wise to leverage their current sensor technology and spend resources in other areas.

We are in a period where 90% of the active photographers can produce excellent results with 90% of the current technologies.

At the price Leica charges I don't think it's too much to ask for sensor technology to be on par with the other brands' flagships. Higher MP count is not only better for printing but also results in better downsampled files for online use.

I hope that when they refresh the M properly later this year or the next, we can see something in the 35-40MP range.

As for the M-D, I don't understand why the body has to adhere to the M240's size. One-size-fit-all accessories are great, but couldn't Leica at least shave off some height?

It's got to be a lot cheaper than an M262 for it to make sense now, seeing it is the same size but with less features.

Of course it will be more expensive...

Actually I find sensor technology so good across the board that the question which camera has the “best” is wholly academic and only significant for pixel geeks. Even the complaints about the corners performance of Leica lenses on Sony cameras have a high Princess on the Pea content IMO.

Very nice looking and I don't mind the sensor.
But 30% more for the same size is hard to explain with just r&d costs.
So maybe in a couple of years a used one will be closer to my price range.

Just out of curiosity, since I've never used a digital camera that had neither a back LCD or electronic viewfinder. I currently use an M262 and M9P, so optical rangefinders with back LCD's and I also use an Olympus E-M1 outfit, so both a back LCD and EVF...

Let just skip over there being no way to review an image after capture, which I don't understand, but it is, what it is...

How does one format an SD card in a camera like this, or does the camera just do that when you load the card and close the bottom?

Is the white balance setting a default auto, or is there some way to adjust it? What if you want to shift from color to black & white in-camera?

DNG, JPEG or both, how does one set it?

How do you know if you are nearing capacity with the SD card you have installed, or if there is a card error?

These are three I can think of right off the top. I know there are others I'm just not taking the time to consider right now, I'm just curious how this all works on a digital camera with an optical rangefinder and no LCD.

I know digital Leicas are niche products. This model has got to be the niche of niches.
