This is a known issue with the R-D1, along with the whole host of other quality control issues, some bodies were shipped without serial numbers.

thanks! I saw this number it but I wasnt sure about it , cause I got my camera last week (from a shop) and it has #2214. Just expected a higher number...

I think there's been some previous discussion about the sequence of the serial numbers. Seems like different regions of the world have been allocated a different of numbers which can be quite far apart. Do a search, the numbers were posted for comparison. Congrats on your purchase. I'm still quite undecided on getting a R-D1 myself.

When I bought the R-D1, I did it after a few years of digital SLR's. It's some kind of 'risk', cause I sold anything else for it.
And - it my first rangefinder at all.
But I begin to learn and like the handling. And I like quality of the pictures.
