New York May NYC Meet-Up

The "zone" is the same physiological focused hyper-awareness you feel in combat with an active threat. Only, the creative zone is a place to engage those feelings and that awareness but to channel it into a piece of artistic work or movement or music or doing something like working on a car. One can immerse oneself in that zone and unlearn the body's innate knowledge that it is for survival only. It can be harnessed for healing in its ultimate expression.

Well said.

BTW, Cal, at the last meetup, we talked about wristwatches.
I wear Montblanc wristwatches, mostly because I was a graphic artist & like having a watch that matches my ballpoints.

But I do go thru interests in Rolex.

Yes, Rolex has military history. But Omega was only wristwatch to go to the Moon.
Recently that fact was upended by a very public Auction that one Astronaut brought along a Bulova wristwatch as a backup.

MFM,

You are correct that my watches are luxury items and status symbols. Pretty ghetto when you understand that my dad was poor, an illegal immigrant, and illiterate.

The ultimate ghetto statement to remind me that I'm no longer poor and powerless are the Victorian and Edwardian old mine cut diamond rings I own. One is gold and the other platnum that date to 1850's and 1880's.

These diamonds are about 1 1/4 caret each, the platinum ring (Eddie) also has three small diamonds on either side. I wear these rings on my left pinky together. "Maggie" thinks that together that they are over the top. Really ghetto and a pretty big statement.

At one time these rings graced the hands of British nobility at a time when the sun never set on the British empire. Now they grace the hand of an Asian.

If you understand post colonial culture these luxury items have a very deep meaning to my identity.

The Panerai GMT is a limited edition, and like my Rolex they changed the AM/PM indicator and made the watch dial more busy. My Panerai kinda became an instant collectable.

"Maggie" made an observation: that I either dress down into a street style of sportswear; or I go full tilt into Paul Smith suits; and I seldom just dress casual. The watches are a statement to go with these looks. Also know that I have that muscular military build that goes with the watch's military heritage.

As far as cameras and darkroom gear that I own, there is no shortage and I'm kinda stocked up. Perhaps not as crazy as Dan, but not far behind. Pretty much I have more than what is practical.

MFM,

Mucho thanks.

Also I didn't realize that Microdol is a D-23 derivitive.

All very helpful.

Wearing a Generation One pair of vintage Oakley's that I had prescription lenses made for I jogged to 57th Street via Central Park with a long-cut through the Harlem Hills with a pair of 3 pound heavy hands to deliver my Rolex to the "Time Machine" on 57th and Madison.

Today the muscles for running that haven't been used in a while have been awakened, and the heavy hands surely tightens up the core. After work I will be starting my 3 mile runs home along the East River Prom-N-odd. I'm wearing Patagonia knickers, and today I'll be getting three more pair delivered: one black; two charcoal grey. About a three mile run that I can do as a time trial. Today's run will be slow though.

$750.00 is the starting point for a CLA on a Rolex. I specified no polish, because all the scratches and dings I put there, and I hear of stories where they destroy the lines on the watch with over polishing. Basically if I want a new watch I'd buy one.

I bought my Sub at the end of 2003, and the watch has been running for over 15 years straight. When I wore my Panerai, I put the Rolex on this automated watch winder my friend gave me as a Christmas present. This watch has never been serviced.

So now I'm wearing my Panerai with a cracked crystal. The crack is close to the bezel between 4 and 7 o'clock. I kinda forgot how oversized this watch is. Muy macho. I love the "sandwitch dial." I bought a $600.00 "deployment" to use with the rubber strap. Very elegant design.

So next is an estimate and a 6-8 week wait.

I was able to tweak three of my Tele's. The new Fralin pick-ups I really love. Nicely voiced with a good amount of thud without the mud and crude. Really interesting how a little overwind can add definition and articulation. I think these Fralins in the carved top Tele is my favorite because it gives me that acoustic piano sound that has mucho complexity without distortion.

Dan,

Please tell me more about DK-50. Because of Chris I think I will be trying D-23 because it seems like an alternative "Slacker's Brew:" A compensating developer; and only two chemicals for cheap-cheap-cheap.

Cal

Cal,

Consider D-25 instead of D-23 since the former was designed for small format negatives, giving fine grain and medium to low contrast.

Only one other ingredient is needed, too: Sodium bisulfite.

If interested, I have the formula and starting times around here.

Saul,

Please do share. I'm not the only guy here who is a CF trying to save money and also looking for supreme results.

Phil really hooked Joe and I on Kodak 5222.

Pretty much allows me to go back in time when film was less costly.

Chris is a physicist and a science nerd BTW. LOL.

From Dan and Tom Abramson I also got the formula for ADOX PQ which is the developer optimized for 5222.

Also if you ever get to NYC I would like to take you on a ride up 9W to Bear Mountain. I have a road bike that is geared. Really like a road biker's paradise. Seems like there are an abundance of Colnago's among the riders.

Water @ 125 F 750 ml
Metol 7.5 g
Sodium sulfite, anhydrous 100 g
Sodium bisulfite 15 g
Cold water to make 1.0 liter

You'll have to work out your own development time but for most roll films it's around 13min in a tank. Best to also decrease ISO by half.

With my student perk, 5222 bought in 400ft cans yields 66x 36exp rolls at about $2.85 per roll.
I still have an unopened 400ft can and enough reloadables to account for 40 rolls. I love TriX but I really need to migrate to 5222 since it costs 1/3 the price over single roll film.

Saul,

Many thanks. I have to remember to bring the ADOX PQ formula to work to post it for others.

Testing for development for me depends on my aggitation. I tend to extend times and minimize aggitation. I try to get a compensating effect.

Phil,

No doubt if you want the old Freestyle prices of back in the day bulk loading Kodak 5222 is the way to go.

Also if you develop mucho film the cost of developers adds up fast.

As I approach retirement I'm going cheap-cheap-cheap.

For medium format I can get Rollie 400S in 70mm in bulk. With a Linhof CINE I can load cassettes with 15 feet of film for around 60 exposures in 6x7. Cost is about $3.00 a 120 equiv.

Rollie lied about the film speed, really only about 150 ISO with Diafine, and about 80-100 ISO with Rodinal.

Kinda crazy loading 15 fet of film on a stainless steel reel. I have three 15 foot reels and a JOBO tank that can accommodate these three reels. Kinda crazy being able to develop 180 6x7's in one tank.

Cheap-cheap-cheap.

Bonus shooting a baby Linhof is a free gym membership. LOL. Kinda like carrying around half a bowling ball, but I can shoot medium format as if shooting a Leica.

My thinking is that my digital printing is more expensive than wet printing because with digital I print larger. I'll see, but in the end it might be more cost feasible to shoot and print film. Unless I contact print digital negatives my max print sheet size would likely be a 20x24 for wet printing.
