...the friendly skys...
I was so reluctant to give up AE, let alone ttl metering. Now I find that when using the M6TTL & MP, I usually preset the aperture, & shutter speed, and am usually within a 1/2 stop of the metered value. Sometimes spot on. I have been getting more and more consistient with the M's. So much so that I just traded in my ZI (A lovely camera in it's own right--I am keeping a freshly CLA'd Hexar RF, for when I'm feeling lazy.) I am actually cleaning out everything except 1 SLR kit, and select M gear. I an toying with the idea of an earlier (than M5) M-mount. I have 21,28,35,50,75,90 lenses. The Hexar's about .60x, MP-.72x, and M6TTL is .85x. I do not need 135mm brightlines--that length is too big for me on an M. What's the obvious choice?

I'd go with an M4. I am thinking similar myself. I wouldn't mind having a second body so I could put the 90 on for portraits and the 35 for everything else. I don't need the meter all the time and with the m6 I already have it there so my second body someday will most likely be an M4.

Chris: Why not the M3 for the 90?

Berliner: I think it also depends on what lenses you want to use most. Get the M4 if you want to use your 28. Get a M3 if you use your 50 and 90 often.

An M3 would be fine as well, but my M6 is a .85 so in reality I might even end up putting the 90 on that. I'm also hoping for a 75 someday, so the M4 would have the frame lines.. I think 😉

An M2 would be cool as well 😛

In the end, it would probably just depend on which one came into the store first and how it felt in my hands. I've picked up a number of M3's and fiddled with them, but never an M2 or an M4.

M2, of course!

M2, of course!

Since you've specified that 35, 50 and 90 are your most used lenses, the M2 is the default choice. You'll love the simplicity of the viewfinder. Also, they're considerably cheaper than an M4.

Since you have an MP that you could use without battery and you don't want the 135mm frameline, the two choices are M2 and M3, IMO.

Everybody needs an M3 ... 🙂

Please do yourself a favor and look at an M2. The clean uncluttered vf is a joy to use and the build quality is second to none...imho. My M2 is my favorite camera to shoot with when I just want to go out and kick around. I find using an external vf for my 21, 25 & 28 mm lens no big thing.

The 35/50/90 lenses with an M2, loaded with your favorite film, will make for a wonderful day shooting.

Best Regards,

Bob

ps...I carry a cv meter for time I need help with exposure settings.

An M2 then. Still toying with the idea. For now, I've taken the bateries out of the MP. I'll see what the next few rolls look like, and should know better. So the M2 has JUST 35, 50 & 90 lines showing single? That sounds nice.

Yes, three individual, seperate framlines...the 35 brings up the 35, the 50 the 50 & the 90 the 90....simple, elegant. This link from Cameraquest may be helpful http://www.cameraquest.com/mguide.htm#M2's
