Just wondering if any of the Melbourne people are at/going to the cricket today....great day for it and bound to be plenty of great shots to be had....

Perhaps you can post some pics tomorrow if you went.... in case you can't tell I wish I was there!

Hey Peter,

Actually the game is over now...it was a charity fundraiser game for the Asian Tsunami Disater played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The teams were made up of the best players in the world, an ACC Asian team comprising Indian, Pakistan, SriLankan and Bangladesh players VS ICC World team made up of players from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England and the West Indies.

Not only was this a great way of raising money, I think somewhere around $14million AUD, but it will have been one of the only times that such an "ALL STAR" team with all the current greats in cricket have played.

I only wish the "Little Master" Sachin Tendulkar had batted....he might have evened things up a bit. Unfortunately the Asian team lost but it was a pretty awesome game...I was watching on TV.....REALLY WISH I HAD BEEN THERE!:D

Final score was RoW 8/344 vs Asia 232 in front of a MCG crowd of 80,000 and a TV audience of over 1 billion in 122 countries.

Be cool if anyone got some photos from the event, I think there would have been a pretty festive atmosphere with all the supporters of the various teams represented.

Hey Peter,

are you an expat in America or an American with an interest in cricket....very rare if the later...although I do remember reading that Boston used to be a pretty strong bastion of cricket in the USA, well at least 100 plus years ago! :D

I was there. Atmosphere was like most other cricket games though. I thought they would have made a bit more of a show of the game. Took some photos, but it will be the weekend before I get a chance to develop them.

I'm an expat. Born and raised in Manchester, used to go and see Lancashire play at OT with my dad. My graduate school advisor was from Melbourne and once took all his students to see England play Australia at Edgebaston. He brought a huge cooler of Foster's! :) Great bloke!!

I played when I was a kid (bowler) but played football and rugby seriously. Those are the two sports I'm really into. :)

Akalai, whereabouts are you located? Didn't see you comment on the Melbourne gathering thread...

Cheers,
Steve

Melbourne Grand Prix 05

Melbourne Grand Prix 05

While we're on the subject of Melbourne - anyone going to the Formula One Grand Prix in March? I'll be there, loaded up with Bessa & Canon gear - Moss stand this year - look forward to seeing other people's images from that. I was there two years ago (pre-rangefinder) and bluffed my way into the pit lane on the Wednesday - doubt I'll top that any time soon!

Feel free to forward me references for camera shops worth visiting while I'm there; I haven't really branched out beyond the main strip downtown (on a street whose name escapes me, but I'm sure residents will know where I mean). I'll be staying in St Kilda.
R!

Hoping to get there. I went for the first time last year, as a guest of my nephew, who'd managed to score a couple of spots in a corporate marquee right at the start of the main straight. Huge fun! Can't remember why, but I didn't take a camera with me.

Hopefully he'll score again this year.

Cheers,
Steve

Hey Stephen,

I am up in Sydney, which is why I haven't added anything to the Melbourne get together....be fun but just don't have the time at the moment...

The GrandPrix would also be alot of fun, I went to the last two in Adelaide while I was still in High School and have seen a German GP while I was over there, really wanted to get to Monaco but never made it...been holding off going to Melbourne until I can wrangle some decent invite in a box with plenty of free everything or have a chance to meet up with friends of friends who are race engineers/computer operators and get a tour of the pits, well as much as you can get these days with the level of security teams have, most likely a NO photo event! (I think photos can be taken but when they are allowed if the cowling is off there will be "security" blankets over the parts of interest....booo!)

Stephen you have to stick close to your nephew! ;) And ofcourse if he has any spare tickets let me know.....hahaha I wish....

I can STILL remember the distinct sound of the now "old" 12 cylinder Ferrari, the last Adelaide event was the last showing of a Ferrari V12 before they swapped to the very successful V10 designs. I am not a Ferrari fantatic but you could even make it out amongst all the other cars, something that is quite difficult to do these days.

...actually I am thinking of going to Shanghai later in the year, might have to make it coincide with the Shanghai GP! What was the crowd there last year...something like 400,000 on race day alone!!!
