I scan *EVERYTHING* in the most basic flat setting possible. Why? because scanner software is, well cr*p to say the least, so Id much rather set everything to mid muddy grey and do basic black and white points in Levels in photoshop or elements, which is going to do a much better job and let you see it in much finer detail. Photoshop is a *MUCH* better tool for doing this then the scanner, and you can archive your flat scans and anytime you want to go back to them you have the same starting ground to work from.
Scanning as RAW files, well there is always some geek way of doing things on a computer but I am amazed that there is no way to see the image in positive whilst you edit it in Camera Raw......................!
