Save the date: Saturday June 22d for the Mermaid Parade.
I intend on going early before the crowd/mob gets too big. I find that's when the best shooting happens. Last year it was reported that there were 750,000 spectators which set a limit/record. Every year is different.

there may not be a mermaid parade...

I'm not sure if I should post this on our local thread, or if a broader audience will help. (Cal, I'll let you decide). The Mermaid Parade this year is suffering from Sandy. Help out if you can, or if you want to take pictures!

I'm sorry to hear it's in trouble (seriously). You pervs (you know who you are) will have to look elsewhere for boobs and butts maybe (not so serious)?
I won't be going this year, since photographing people with 50 other photographers in the background of my photos isn't my thing.
Have fun all.

In such situations a ND filter and fast aperture make their worth apparent.

To Light & Love ...
I have to Agree with John
I'm rather tired of the chaotic mass photographer overload On the Mermaid Day..
much prefer shooting Coney Island on any other Day
Have Fun All, theres always Lots to See & Do. ...

I really like the energy and competition from many photographers in the same scene. Especially when after sometime they begin to copy my shots and give me their place and show respect without even knowing who I'm.

It was great many years ago when it was just a fringe parade when maybe a couple of hundred people attended. Now, it is a fat and bloated.
I'll parade my wares elsewhere, thank you very much.....

True... it's basically the only approach.

This is a good thread where I wish to voice an opinion that has been bothering me for sometime now.
Fisherman attitude among photographers.
What I mean by this is that two fishermen in the same pond is one too many, so one can understand why fisherman might avoid one another, but photographers?
Seriously, how many Mermaid parade photos will be exhibited on MOMA? So, why feel constrained by other people with cameras when its just a way to enjoy the experience?
Don't go out to "make art"; therefore, resenting others doing the same, go out and enjoy the event itself.
My two cents.

Well, I go out with other photographers half of the time I photograph. I just don't enjoy the mermaid parade. A girl shows up with her boobs hanging out and then 50 guys run up to her to photograph her. That sums it up the event for me. I know it is more than that, but I'm just not a parade kind of guy.

I go early to avoid the feeding frenzy, and I leave early to avoid the mob scene, but I always have fun. Last year I shot color slides in MF, and know that I seldom shoot color. To me the Mermaid Parade is an opportunity to play around, experiment and have fun.
I will agree that the best shooting was my first Mermaid Parade years ago, but with Sandy's aftermath this year's event surely will be different.

Attending an event when only a few hundred people are there having a great time is a very different experience attending another where hundreds of thousands are there, hoping to recreate the feeling when it was a a only a few hundred. It's not the same event anymore.

To me the Mermaid Parade is like a New York version of Marty Gras.
Also I object to the term perv. I consider myself a "Toothless Tiger." LOL.

I guess you never attended the Puerto Rican or Dominican Day Parades.

Similar, but different. Then there's Gay Pride, and the Dance Parade that I mentioned in another thread.
