New York Mermaid Parade 2015: Saturday June 20th

I'll be there early, probably around 11:00 and clear out shortly after the parade kicks off at 1:00. It's very difficult to get a good spot to see the actual parade unless you're willing to camp out in one place for a couple of hours before the parade begins.
I usually hang out early in the staging area and then drift over to the Boardwalk.
Does anyone else have a better strategy?
 
Where are last years pix? Too far for me to come...but good luck!

I get there really-really early when Coney Island is empty. For me the stream of paraders are fresh, more relaxed and definately are better subjects to photograph. In a slacker's way the parade kinda comes to me, and I think I get a fresh perspective of the event, the location, and the spirit of the moment.

I'm usually there around 9:00 AM and I'm leaving by the time the parade starts. I refuse to deal with the crowds and other shooters jumping into my shots. To me the set up leading up to the parade is the most interesting timwe to shoot.

I definately want to exploit Coney Island when its empty very early in the morning.

I think I'll use medium format, and the pair of cameras I will use will be my Plaubel 69W Proshift that has a 21mm FOV and my Fuji GL690 with the 100/3.5 lens that is a 40mm FOV as a wide/normal 6x9 pair. I'll be shooting Tri-X and Acros (mostly Acros at 50 and 80). The Tri-X I intend to utilize for shooting the grand terminal that is a large subway hub that has some great arch-U-texture as they say in Brooklyn.

Last year I carried three Leica M-bodies with either 21-28-50 or 21-35-90.

Anyways Coney Island displays a moody vibe without people when its vacant. Something makes me want to capture it again, but this time in 120 by exploiting a 6x9 big negative.

Paul,

This art parade is a shooter's delight. Always a fun event, but the crowds get monsterous. Someone once called it "Like the Gay Pride Parade, except for straight people." Exhibitionism and public nudity like I imagine as in Marty-Graws in New Orleans.

I also have 5 cans of R-12 refrigerant that I'll try to sell to the vintage car buffs. This stuff is no longer made and somehow in my wanderings someone gave me their stockpile. This will likely cover my cost of all the film I will shoot. Only 8 exposures per roll.

Any good festivals or events in the fall? Im still itching to get out your way.
