metal hood for the 40/2?

cameraquest advertises their 39mm metal hood fits the summicron 40/2...does anyone here use one on that lens on a cl?
does it interfere with the vf?

i'm a fan of the hoods as used on the canon lenses i had.

the heavystar is way cheaper but the cq hood is smaller.
how does series 5.5 translate to 39mm?

I tried the heavystar I got from you on that 40/2. It would not stay on - I could barely get the treads to start, much less screw on enough to hold the hood in place. I'd say either look for an old Kodak 5.5 hood or use the cameraquest hood.

Joe, if your lens is the Rokkor version, then it has 40.5 m threads. If it is the Summicron version, then you are in for a problem finding filters and hoods. The Summicron may have 39mm diameter, but the thread pitch is different (finer, I believe) than the standard 39 filters and hoods for other Leica lenses. You can jam a standard 39mm accessory on the lens but it will not screw in properly.

it has the rubber hood but i'd like metal if i can find one.

The message 'CL chat' from April discussed different hood options for the 40C.
Here is my post from then; I modified the original rubber hood to take a 35 summicron rectangular hood.

--You need to sacrifice the original rubber 40C hood to do this mod.
Cut the rubber hood off of its metal retaining ring and trim the remaining rubber down with an x-acto knife.
You can gauge how much you need to trim by eye-balling the diameter of the 35 cron hood and the 40C retaining ring. The rubber should be trim enough for the 35 hood to clip on to it. After trimming the rubber and fitting the 35 hood on the 40C retaining ring, screw it on to the lens, and then remove the 35 hood and align it correctly on the camera. You can still use a 5.5 filter since the retaining ring is the original 40c, which will hold it on.
I also cut 4 thin strips of black gaffers tape and layered them on the aperture ring of the 40C so it is easier to grip because the 35 hood is a little larger than the aperture ring, and the two are right next to each other.
The final setup works well. The 35 hood is compact and doesn't flop around like the original rubber one. There's no problem with vignetting, either.

Joe, I'm testing one of this guy's hoods on my 40 Cron:

The first roll came back fine, but I'm testing another stopped completely down looking for vignetting. It's nice and compact unlike a Heavystar hood (I have one of those, too).

I have a 39mm Rodenstock filter on my 40/2 Cron right now. It's a nice little filter, and it screws about a turn and a half into the threads on the lens. It sits perfectly fine there, too.

I don't think there's problems with it.

I feel like I'm missing something in the discussion here. I have a 40mm summicron on a Leica CL and I bought one of the original rubber hoods and cap to go with it. Works fine, has the correct threading, hasn't horribly aged or even cracked, doesn't flop around, doesn't block my view through the finder very much, and because it folds back down around the lens when I want to pack the camera away it supports the CL as being a very small travel-sized camera. Did I just get lucky with the rubber hood I purchased? Or is there some other significant advantage to a solid hood that I'm not appreciating? Inquiring minds want to know! 🙂

the rubber hood is fine for the job of shading the lens.
my soon to arrive kens has one attached so i'm ok there.

i like a metal hood because i don't use a uv for protection and find a metal hood helps with the bumps and bruises of life.

I'm in Atlanta at the moment sans camera - I'll check when I get home and post the results. I *think* it's about 3/4 of a turn, and it's quite secure.
