Metal prints

For any Canadians looking to try this, Blacks.ca has cyber monday deal for all wall-art prints (metal, canvas, acrylic) for 40% off. I'm trying to figure out which print I'm going to try it with when I get home tonight.

Maybe some of the US print services are also having a big sale?

Well, I took the gamble and ordered a metal print from FineArtAmerica. I uploaded an 11X14" image that is abstract and does not rely on resolution to make it's point.
Their aluminum is 1/16" thick (pretty stiff), and has a white base coat under the printed image. Slight color shift toward magenta, compared to the paper print that I ordered along with the metal print.
It looks very nice. I packed it away so I can't show you an image right now. But I have a question for those of you who actually heve printed on metal.

How scratch resistant are these things?? I am afraid to touch it. It was packed EXTREMELY well, and I have it repacked until I understand how to handle it.

Have posted this same question to the FineArtAmerica community. Not much feedback yet.

** EDIT: I just got an email response from FineArtAmerica customer support. It reads:
"There is no coating on the metal prints, they are not scratch resistant.
So they should be treated as fine art prints."

I missed this when you first posted this thread. Nice photos Shadowfox! I need to look and see what I think might look good on that medium. Thanks for posting.

I can't say how "rugged" yours are, but the ones we (read: Alan Maltz Gallery in Key West) have made via ImageWizards are not overly fragile but can be scratched without a lot of effort. These are very glossy prints on a reasonably thick aluminum sheet that has a white surface coating.

If anyone is in the Naples, FL area on this coming Tuesday (read: March 25, 2014) they can see a number of Alan's images at the Naples Depot Museum. He's having a book signing for his new coffee table book and there will be a number of images on display. Most will be on aluminum in sizes ranging from 37"x64" to 72"x32". All of the images on display that night will have been taken on 35mm Velvia and scanned with an Imagon 848 scanner.
