meter and a 50

the canon 50/1.2 came in the mail today along with a canon meter for the p.

the meter is spot on with my little pilot 2.
not sure i will ever actually use it but it's kinda fun to have.

the 50/1.2 came by way of a mad scientist who rescued it from his work's lab and after playing with it sold it to our very own taffer who tired of it and sold it to me.
it is in immaculate shape. the inside looked like it had been taken apart and scrubbed clean. the infinity lock has been completely removed, my sad, but the lens is so fat that focussing should be no problem.
the rear element had a trace of the canon haze on it so i took it apart and cleaned it up. first with lens cleaner, then with ispropyl alcohol and then with goo gone! the goo gone did the trick, haze all gone now!! 🙂
the rubber hood i bought fits but takes up almost half of the 50mm framelines. need to cut it (ugly) or maybe try one of those 55mm metal wide angle hoods. not sure yet.

the plan is to mount this sucker on the m3 and have a carry round in the dark and dark of winter kit.

I think cutting the hood would give it character. And everyone knows that an M3 with a Canon 50/1.2 needs more character than it already has. 😀

not gonna try to cut it cause...i found a metal hoya series 7 hood and a series 7 to 55 adapter in my 'stuff' box and together they fit the lens perfectly.
doesn't look like it will vignette but i guess the proof will be in the pics.
hope to shoot a few tomorrow at lunch.

I thought about using a rubber hood, before I found the metal hood from Heavystar. I was thinking about getting a bit of coat-hanger wire, and bending it into a rectangle, then putting it around the rubber hood. The wire would bend the rubber hood into the desired rectangular shape. Never got to try it - give it a go Joe and let us know if it works!

I have a pretty deep hood that I use with mine so your's shouldn't vignette.

Did it remove the coating, or just the haze? Better to take the coating off than to have the haze.

Coatings are colored.

Was it "Purple Haze"?

Deep-six the hood and shoot naked (the lens that is). The Canon 50/1.2 is semi-permanently mounted on my MP and I never use a hood. Never noticed any flare either.

goo gone is made to remove sticky substances like the residue from stickers left too long on something.
i discovered it cleans stuff up really well.

brian, it did not remove all the haze from my 35/3.5 lens but the lens looks better now than before.

I am inspired to try to open up a couple lenses with the intent of cleaning them. I think will start with the cheap ones thought.

once i got over the intitial fear of ruining a lens it was relatively easy.
i still don't go deep but pulling the modules apart to get at the inner surfaces is ok.

they are a module unto themselves. you only ever have access to the outside of the groups.

my first was the inexpensive 35/3.5 and it was not worth it to me to send out for a cleaning.
i might send it out sometime as the haze did not come completely off.
i lost the film that i took with it and have not used it since, but i might keep it a bit hazy to get 'that look'. i have enough 35's to specialize i think.

When i cleaned the 50/1.2 there was no problem getting the rear module back in. I did have to tighten the complete lens module in the focus mount, held in my a retaining ring, after shooting the first test roll. A quarter turn or so made a difference when shooting wide-open. Yesterday, I had the Nokton taken apart 2 minutes after unpacking.

I'm really looking forward to that lens on your incoming M3 🙂 I always found that lens to suit better a bigger camera (Canon 7 ie) than on a P, where for my taste it looked a bit oversized.

It's also a great lens to use on a Bessa-T due to the 1.5x RF magnification of that camera, and it looks really cool as well !

The natural environment of the 1.2 for me would be the insides of a dark bar/pub with live music, using the lens to shoot some portraits.
