ever get really bad migraine headaches?

i do, ever since i was a kid and still to this day.

i was playing around with the canon g2 and took this shot.
as soon as i saw it i thought to myself, man that's what i feel like when i have a migraine.

don't stare too long or you may get one too.

Thanks for the insight Joe.

Hate to say this, I don't get migraines or headaches. I'm end up throwning out the unused, assorted pain killers I buy thinking they might come in handy one day. The drug companies must love me.

Stu :)

Got a bad headache this morning... but looking through this board distracted me enough to forget it.

On the other hand, when I get a migraine, I'm out of commission for a minimum of 4 hours, need a complete sensory deprivation, and the slightest noise makes me sick. Not a shape I want to be in the near future!

And, joe, I just didn't click on that attachment. I don't want to see the world like that in a long time... Not until my next migraine! :(

However, nothing beats Excedrin (when taken early, and on time).

Thank you, gents, for making me feel lucky. I do get mild headaches sometimes, probably due to eye strain, but like Stu I usually end up tossing pain killers when they're outdated.

I used to get them quit a lot...then i started to relax with a martini and a nice cigar twice a day...now i have no more camera shakes or headaches. can't say much for my liver 20 years down the road from now...but it helps me. ;)

alcohol has become a major trigger for me.
before i finish a drink or a beer i am in major pain.

i haven't had a drink in years and i just quit smoking this past july/august.

all i have left is my camera...

Hi Joe,

I take it you got your card reader stuff sorted out. How's it going with the G2?

Cheers,

Sean

I haven't in a couple of years now, my doc says some people stop having them around 40 and mine just stopped happening. When I did get them the best thing I found was Alka-seltzer. A glass of it and a hour or two nap would sometimes be enough.

hey sean,

yes i did.
i wound up going to radio shack and bought a very inexpensive card reader for cf cards only. i love this plug & play stuff.
my computer recognizes it and i open the files with photoshop.
i stopped using raw mode for now because it involves extra steps. if i start shooting great photos i might start using raw again.
i like having the g2 for fun stuff, it's like an instant fix when i feel the need to shoot and see some new stuff right away.

i doubt that digital will replace film for me but it has a place.
my smaller camera bag now takes one canon p body w/ 2 lenses and the g2 most of the time. i may even get to like colour.

thanks for asking.

Hi Joe,

Great to hear. Glad that you got it all sorted out. What does "I blame myself" mean?

Cheers,

Sean

I still have all those bad habits although I switched to smoking pipe or cigar (mostly) and drink only on company and mostly on weekends.

And then there is this other adiction:

Yes, I also get migraines, although for me it's more like looking down a tunnel than seeing the world out of focus. All I can do is take some Excedrin Migraine and try to sleep off the worst of it in a dark quiet room. Still trying to find my triggers, as they just started happening a couple of years ago.

And Socke, I think I like your last addiction, where can I get hooked on that? :)

I started getting migraine headaches when I was about 27 or 28 years old. I had no idea what they were - the first time I got one, I thought it was a brain tumor or something. First heavy glare on everything, then nausea, then a pounding headache that made breathing painful. I had them take me to the hospital by ambulance from work! Turned out to be classic migraine symptoms - who knew?

When I got them, I had about 20 minutes from the time my vision went wacky until the headache hit. And by that time, I had to be home in bed - lights off, no noise, etc. You guys know what I mean. 24 hours of bedrest and I'd be ok - shaky, but ok.

I had four of them in as many weeks - my doctor was getting ready to send me to a neurologist - then I got a final migraine where I got all the symptoms but no headache - just wiped out for 24 hours as usual anyway.

Then they stopped. I am 43 now - never had another. Don't know why they started or why they stopped. I'm just thankful that they did. It was some of the worst pain I've ever experienced.

As to drinking and smoking - I wasn't a smoker at the time - I didn't start smoking until I was 31. I quit smoking last June - hoo-yah! I drink about two beers a night - for medicinal purposes only. I take a 81mg St Joseph's aspirin every morning. Just had a followup for my physical - BP 120/80, pulse 70, weight 265, height 5-10. Cholesterol 203, Bad cholesterol 140. Gotta lower the bad cholesterol and lose weight, but otherwise I'm in good shape. Strong as a house.

Anyone who gets migraines has my full sympathy!

Best Regards,

Bill Mattocks

My migraines have been very occasional... Like once or twice a year. And just to think of the pain makes me cringe. However, I did find the triggers: for a time it was alcohol, but then, drinking one or two glasses of wine per day took care of it. Now, I know for sure it's chocolate.

My wife's happy about it; when I buy the stuff from a local store (first rate quality), we can have it in the house for days as it won't fly. I'll eat it on the rare days I sense I can. Otherwise, I won't, and, for a former chocoholic, it's no longer a problem.

There must be something about age, body chemistry and nutrition here. If Bill's headaches started that late in life, and mine have come up few and far apart from each other... maybe we're, say, maturing?

Oh! One thing my doctor said: pent up stress may trigger the stuff... and constipation.

Has anyone heard of rangefinder-triggered headaches? That'd be really bad news... :(

mine started when i was 8 years old, i'm 54 now and except for a 3 year span many years ago they still plague me.
i can go for months without one and then have 3 in a month.

as i age they have a more dilbilitating effect on me and the aftermath lasts longer.

Migraine seems to aflict photographers particularly as well as other creative types,...Mine is now under control to the extent that i do not use any medication at all,..However, it needs great care to avoid this horror.

As several of you have noted, diet plays a big part,....notable triggers are chocolate, alchohol, cheese (just LOVE a good Cheddar!!) very spicy food particularly curry, and some of the more exotic cooking oils and essences.

Ways to help advoidance;.....The herb 'feverfew',...can be grown in the garden (northern Europe)...consume one lsmall leaf daily for three months then adjust for advoidance,...I used t o throw a leaf from the garden between two slices of bread when leaving the cottage.

Eat at least three slices brown bread daily as this is excellent at cleaning the gut,..this precaution alone can work for some sufferers. Jasmine tea instead of that coffee!

Early warning signs which may be useful;....visual phenomena ie., 'tails' on lights,..unlikely colours,..loss of central vision area,...'jazzy' break-up with psychadelic colours!! Cold saliva or tongue,..this is the first signal for me.

Hope some of this helps some of you!
