To me, it feels like Flickr did in 2006-2007, if that makes sense.

As a veteran of both booms, I totally agree with the Flickr comparison. IG is a huge part of my daily experience right now. I've found many likeminded folks on there that make my days brighter.

IG is still something new, which always attracts at beginning.
Why 500pix is the failure and IG is great.
500px was trying to compete with Flickr.
While IG is version of FB oriented on visual elements of the message.
It seems to be very democratic as well, everyone is the artist with iPhone and simple application. While on Flickr it is gear, gear, gear and ... Photoshop.

the thing that bugs me about all of these self-proclaimed experts and gatekeepers is that they're overselling their, uh, expertise. they're taking advantage of the fact that you can frame common knowledge as information that's worth paying for. make a half-decent, legitimate looking website, come up with a compelling shtick, and you'll develop a following.

then people gripe about having to pay for information that is actually worth the money. 🙄

I read the guy because he's a good writer, not out of some outdated notion of professional legitimacy. Blogging, offering workshops, and cultivating an internet following seem to me entirely reasonable ways of being "pro" in 2015.

He is a good writer, and somewhat different than most other bloggers out there.
But ... I stopped reading him after he reacted when he got knocked back from a gallery and started complaining about the art world and how it is somehow against him. He seems to be a very competent photographer and I'm sure he is very good at his job. But what he tried to sell as "art" was really just cliched boring decoration. I'm not saying I can do better, but his reaction was off-putting. That and is constant and tiring obsession with "ultraprinting". Give me a break.

haven't read all the text he wrote up, yet, neither the comments here below. But his instragram photo matrix on the linked page shows a ton of mediocre, boring images with maybe 1 or 2 of 'em somewhat interesting.
Considering he is supposed to have an eye for it, AND, he han shoot a thousand and edit it down to two without us knowing it -
disappointing.

Seriously. My biking-beer drinking amateur iphone instagrammer friend produces better stuff, at least once a week.

now that i think of it, i realized that- just as in the case of peter lik - i only know/remember his name because it's a funny sounding name. Not because of his work significance 🙂

Same here. He seems very technically proficient (even if some of the PP stuff he does is pretty naff) and he's a good writer so I used to enjoy reading him just to learn things. But the whole art world thing seemed childish, entitled and lacked any self reflexivity.

Still does readable gear reviews, but I won't be following his instagram.

This. Far too often, Ming comes across as a very very bitter and angry person. He's been very good making his web site popular, but very poor at making it pay well, hence why he is so bitter at times.
