Minister D battery options

Hi, I recently acquired a Minister D, everything seems to be working fine, except I haven't been able to test the light meter because I don't have a battery. Is there a modern day equivalent that can be used? Does the minister D have a voltage regulator like the Electros? How do you guys solve this?

I tried it with a LR44, and checked it against my light meter, but to no avail, it's inconsistent... So; it might be broken, or someone should please suggest me another type...? 🙂
