buzzar: ive had the cv 25 and 15 and wasnt so thrilled with either, though i love my cv 75/2.5...i enjoy trying different lens 'brands' and have not yet tried any minolta rf lenses. my only hesitation now has nothing to do with the lens, only with the speed of the lens, as i would much prefer a 'fast' 21 for use on apsc. problem is i dont want to spend $1000usd. so now i struggle, as we all do, with the 'tradeoff' issues!

This is my other 21mm MC Rokkor lens, the 21mm F2.8 MC Rokkor-NL. Has a floating front element, and is retrofocus in design, obviously the 21mm F4 Rokkor-QH -is not- retrofocus. I paid about $400 for it with the lenshood, obviously it is -BIG- which the 21mm F4 -is not-. I sometimes use it on my Nex-3's and it is sa-weet. The 21mm F4 is good for me, for when I am jonesing for a bit of a rangefinder-like buzz. And great for grab shooting. Glad I have both lenses.

An aside-- I am now looking for the original 20mm F2.8 MD Rokkor lenshood, which is a 55mm clamp-on hood, so I believe it would be PERFECT on the 21mm F4 as a dedicated hood. If I can ever find one for a reasonable price, I will buy it. One went recently for $13 on Ebay....

I just checked and the rear group dosen't move at all during focus travel.
It is stationary.

Like most lenses, the whole assembly does move when focusing; that's how it focuses. Having such a short focal length, the total travel is very small.

You know, I just rechecked it, and the entire rear of the lens does move. It's just such a small amount, that I didn't even notice it the first time around. Just a fraction of a mm, I'd say. Hard to notice.

Yep I'd go as far as to say that it's a legendary, serious cult lens. Exceptionally good performance, but -HUGE-. Alot of very good things have been written about this lens on the internet.

I have a 72mm Rokkor Skylight on mine, which is a sort of slimline filter. Never gotten any vignetting on film.

I love my CV 15 on GXR. Have you tried the OM 21/3.5? It's a little slow and low in contrast but the files can be pushed in post. I am saving for the 21/1.8 now that Ricoh has no announcement at CP+ 🙂

i know alex, most everyone raves about the 15. maybe i had a bad copy, but it did nothing for me. i'm a 'sharpness' guy, and my copy was very disappointing in that regard. the 25 was much better, just way too slow for a 35 on apsc...that cv 21/1.8 holds a major attraction for me. i'm not into superfast lenses for superfast sake, but 21mm allows enough DOF to really benefit from high speed. but $1200 for one lens has always been hard for me to get my head around, especially when ive had so many incredble performers at half that price.

The CV 21mm f/4 does make a great companion for the Ricoh, though.

It is very compact and, I think, one of the better CV lenses measured by the price/performance ratio. It's a bonus that you don't need a
21mm finder, so it is really some serious extra versatility you can just put in your pocket while you have some other lens mounted on the Ricoh.

i totally understand the POV on modern wides with digital sensors. however, my ltm old canon 28/3.5 is a super performer on my gxr, honestly stunning and immense character. thus i tend to take that POV with a little more grain of salt, thinking its much more an individual lens thing.

as between the OT minolta and the cv 21s, how do you all compare them?

I used to own the entire LTM Cosina collection. The 21mm and 25mm LTM CV did work great on all cameras (M5 Leica worked great) but I sold them all. Issues were: overall build quality (over time) and a bit clinical "looking", a more modern rendition, than is my preference. I have the entire line of early MC Rokkors, really, I like and use them all, I enjoy their "character".

Minolta Rokkor glass -is- outstanding, opinions do vary, but very few dislike them. Minolta was way ahead on optical designs, and manufactured their own optical glass. That was a pretty big deal. No wonder they hooked up with Leitz in the '70's.
