Minolta Hi-Matic F/Shutter not working

I bought this camera yesterday for 20Cad. Today I put some fresh SR44 (357/303) batteries on today. The light turns on meaning that the batteries work. I can press the shutter button but,,,,,,, the shutter won't open. Would the problem be the batteries or the shutter? Please help!!!!!!!!!!
