It's not "random" that way. You don't see those hidden treasures from the past, just the latest postings. That's the brilliance of the random feature.back alley said:is it really so hard to clik on the 'gallery' link?

But it makes them feel like they have accomplished a goal this way.

With just two images on it.
I'm perfectly happy to stump up an annual fee for the extra cost associated with all matters pertaining to the gallery and a random image 'banner' with the usual amount of images appearing on it.
I think we all realise the work put in by Stephen and all the moderators and this shouldn't become simply a whinge at them that a favourite toy has been taken away. Having said that we should be able to communicate ideas and come to a solution that works for the majority if not (because its impossible) all.

simon,
you can keep clicking the 'more' button under those 2 photos till the cows come home to see an endless stream of photos.
it may not be ideal but it keeps the site flowing. we had problems awhile back with the site speed and many folks were very short tempered about it and it was not a very pleasant time.

Random gallery was back for a few hours yesterday.
Now it's gone again, and in its place is advertising.

Then unless/until a longer term solution is agreed upon it seems that the two images within the gallery is The Random Images Gallery. Not ideal but it is better than nothing as it is a great feature. I do hope that sometime in the, not too distant, future we can come up with a solution that could give us larger scaled version once again.
I find the idea of charges/sponsers for the gallery users quite interesting, if we take up more server space maybe we could spread the cost of more server space...

If we need a better specified server in order to properly prioritise the gallery, I'm certainly willing to donate towards the costs of buying one.

I would agree if this was still a hobby site run by Jorge. It is now owned by Cameraquest and I think the business must be getting something out of this. Would you donate funds to a board owned by B&H or Adorama?iml said:If we need a better specified server in order to properly prioritise the gallery, I'm certainly willing to donate towards the costs of buying one.

Of course I could be way off base and Mr. Gandy could be running this without any connection to his business. If this is the case then I apologize.
I misakenly thought that a large part of the membership would like to see the Random Gallery back and the intent of this original post was just to help spur interest. There was a promise from Mr. Gandy to put it back and I was simply wondering what was taking so long.
It returned for a brief time before what seemed like 10 or so posts appeared complaining about the site's speed before it was yanked. The vocal minority wins again.
I'm done now.

I've been here for about eighteen months, and most of that time there has been a random gallery feature.
On my machine / connection the site has never speeded up or slowed down as the random gallery was switched on or off.

People who like the random photo gallery on the front page and people who like the site to load fast are not mutually exclusive groups. I like both features.
