There a guy here in Korea who's supposed to be as good as Shintaro (but hopefully more "customer friendly") who will do a strip-down and baked enamel repaint for $600.

Would you do it? Is it worth it? Would I ever get my money out of it, if I decided to sell someday? What color would you do? Black only (like factory job) or I was thinking olive drab (O.D.)?

Many thanks for your advice.

Check if it would be possible to see samples of the work done the person. The detailing of lettering is critical to a good looking camera, as is the smoothness and glow of the enameling. If well done, the camera would be at least distinctive.

Would you recover an investment in he $600 range? I'd guess you would not, and could easily lose from $200-400 onthe total transaction. A private sale could be difficult, and an auction requires at least 2 motivated and financially able buyers. That ideal situation doesn't always exist. With the current economic situation in the US, and no signs of either improvement or the government's ability to do something effectual, the outlook for hobby items can be problematic. I've done well lately with other hobby items, but it has been in a niche market, with scarce original items.

I would guess a genuine black Canon RF in excellent cosmetic condition would still do very well, but a repaint..... a crap shoot. But, for your own personal use, it may be worth it to you to have something distinctive and different.
