Does anyone know if a 40mm, modified to bring up the 35 frame in an M, will bring up the 40 frame in the CLE? I tried a search but couldn't find an answer; sorry if this is covered elsewhere. Thanks.

I'm reasonably sure that once the 40mm is altered to bring up the 35 on other M-bodies, it gives you the default frame (no information from the lens) on the CLE, which is the 28.
Using a 35-135 LTM/M adapter on my CLE gives me the 28mm frame only.

That's one good reason to ask questions about used M-Rokkor and Leitz 40/2 lenses: A lot of people have bought 40s and taken a file to them to change the frame indicator.

Joe is correct, once a 40mm lens is modified to bring up 35mm framelines for an M then it is then rendered useless for a CLE. Only the 28mm framelines will be visible as they are visible all the time. Often people modify the lenses with only CL's in mind and since it doesnt effect them they proceed but forget that it does effect their use on CLE's.

i recently bought a rokkor 40mm which had been so modified, for my CLE. As others have said, it did not show the 40 framelines, so i ended up taking it back and swapping for an unmodified one (i didn't realise the first lens had been modified initially).

Sinetsin: Here you go. The 40mm is an almost perfect match to the 35mm framelines of my M6TTL at distances over a few (2-3) meters. Closer than that you have to be careful with framing.

If you don't want to do it yourself, I suspect any Leica technician can do it for you. It should be pretty straight forward to remove the bayonet and file it carefully.
