Monochrom 246 and Leica SL in New Mexico

Many have emulated this exact style to extract great photographs, but to no avail. That's because you purposely left out the one element that makes all the difference....you pink neckerchief! 🙂 . Its like all great chefs leaving out the one key ingredient when retelling their great recipes.

The advice of spending time with your subject rings true as my mentor, a well known reportage photographer espoused and practiced the same approach.

Vince, superb work and appreciate your posting it. I'm often in the D.C. and Baltimore area (and usual photo haunts) and look forward to your show and presentation. I wouldn't have recognized you from simply having viewed your avatar photo all these years until you posted this self portrait. Quite a difference between the two (or at least appeared that way to me).

Exquisite photography! I look forward to seeing a book of this work.

I've been shooting almost exclusively with the SL since last November. I use mostly Leica R lenses on it. A piece of machinery good enough to forget: I find I just don't need to think about the equipment very much at all now that I am using the SL. I could not be happier with it—I find it hard to choose anything else when I go out to make photos.

However, when I see photos from someone with an eye as good as yours, the camera is irrelevant. Your photos are terrific—whatever camera you use will perform beautifully. Enjoy your work and keep on going with it!

I'm hoping that Leica comes out with a monochrom version of the SL. For me it would be better than the color version.

I think Godfrey is onto something with using "R" glass.

Cal, honestly I think the results from the SL as it is are pretty darned good - not sure if a 'mono' version would improve things (having said that, if they did come out with a mono version, I'd likely be interested too). To replicate the mono effect while shooting ('seeing' mono), I just set the camera to RAW+JPEG and make the JPEG monochrome.

And if I did end up getting one, I'd probably stick with my M glass.

If you do B&W only like me (I know you use both) not having a Bayer Filter Array is a very big deal. Pretty much the SL with the 16 Bit without the BFA would kinda crush the M-246 (14Bit) which already is a remarkable camera, but the files would be mucho-muy huge. The resolution to print huge would be a game changer for me.

I kinda predict that Leica will come out with a monochrome version of the SL. Why not?

I also have mucho "M" glass. Hmmm...

Living out here in the country I have limited download allowance...will have to wait until the very end of the month to watch the Maisel video.

Speaking of advice from An Icon, JM once advised me (along with two or three others at the table---I was not on any kind of tete-a-tete basis with him) to occasionally turn around while shooting and look behind. There may be something wonderful going on and you are missing it.

I trust he doesn't recommend it for the studio, though. 🙂

You do have that NM look...next you need a 1952 Chevy pick 'em up to drive around at 10 miles below the speed limit.
