Happened the 2nd time around, but wasn't sure if it was the same card I used. But suddenly my MM refuses to read and display the image playback, cannot format, can't also click the shutter. Did already battery and card pull... still the same. I'm using a Sandisk 8gb Extreme 30mb/s SDHC.
Card can't also be read via the Sandisk ImageMate card reader over at my MBP. What I did is format the card on my Panasonic G3/GX1 and it works again. (And I don't swap around cards in between systems, I have assigned cards solely for the MM)
Temporary solution is to isolate the card first and observe if this happens again. And also did a Format / Overwrite to the card via the MM.
Anybody can chime in or help? TIA.

1. Do not use SanDisk Extreme 8GB with digital Leicas. This particular size and brand is the most common culprit for these sort of problems. Maybe the new M would be OK.
2. Might as well avoid SanDisk altogether with the M9/ME/Monochrom.
3. Avoid continuous mode shooting.
4. Always carry a spare Monochrom formatted card when you're out. I use Lexars and have had no problems with them.

Dave,
I hope you didn't loose too many shots on that card.
I second Richard in regards to Lexar. I use Lexar Pro 16gb 133x and 400x SDHC for my M9 and MM and have no problems.
Hopefully after an complete override (not only format) the MM should handle that card but honestly I wouldn't risk it. The Lexars had been sold in 2-pack for under 40 bucks, I'm not sure how much they are going for now.

Richard and Klaus, thanks for the helpful responses.
I will follow your advice and will relegate my Sandisks to Micro 4/3s and Nikon. I ordered Lexar SD cards in lieu of this.
I lost a few shots, though they were not very important.
Again, thanks!

Whatever
I've been using the SanDisk Ultra cards without issue, though there has been the odd time in which the camera says 'no SD card present', when in fact there is a card in the camera. Usually I either turn the camera off and on, or remove the card and re-insert it, and then it's fine.

Vince, thanks for the info, the other cards I have are the Extreme Pro 95mb/s, which I will temporarily use. But I think it's too risky to use Sandisks as Richard and Klaus have cautioned, so I ordered 4 16gb Lexar for the MM.

It's odd. I've used Sandisk SDHC extreme 16g in my M9 for a year with no issues at all.

The SanDisk Extreme 8G is what caused me and many others a lot of grief. I'm not saying it's SanDisk's fault or even their problem. Supposedly the latest M9 firmware fixes card issues, a Leica acknowledgement that there still were issues. Whether it closes the issue is unclear but I certainly wouldn't put an 8G SanDisk card in my M9 again.
Meanwhile I don't have a Monochrom but my info is that there is only the original firmware for that camera. More likely the earlier M9 firmware card interactions are still relevant for the Monochrom therefore.

Has the Monochrom the same problem that M8?
I can not understand how Leica can sell a new camera like Monochrom with that price and with that old problem... I don't understand. And I don't think the problem is SanDisk... there are a lot of cameras that don't have any problem withn Sandisk cards...

I'm also baffled by this. How Leica can get away with releasing a digital camera, that to this day has issues with known brand of cards is beyond me. It's such a basic thing in digital photography, if it were Canon or Nikon that couldn't read SanDisk cards, imagine the **** storm that would follow.
But with Leica, it's okay. We'll just buy another brand of SD cards, don't mind us the customers.

I agree Richard. And like what others have contributed to this thread, it's most likely Leica's fault and not Sandisk's. I have my Sandisks running smoothly on Panasonic and Nikon bodies.
Cheers.

A M8 / X Pro owner chimes in
As an M8 owner i know the feeling. Same thing happened with a PNY card. So far my X Pro-1 has no issues like the Leicas I and others have owned. Hmmm, for $7k Leica should make sure these problems go away. So far Fuji has been great on this issue, and for only $1399!!!

Actually, Sandisk had quite a few problems on other brand cameras as well, as they brought out their new series of cards. See the resulting **** storms on the relevant forums.I'm also baffled by this. Case histories are not very relevant. I never had any card problems on my M9 using Sandisk cards. That did not prevent others running into trouble.

I too use Sandisk in my M8 and M9 with no problems. Don't ever delete an image from the card, and always reformat the card in the camera after downloading your images. This should keep your card fresh and trouble free.

Oh, I do delete the bad ones from the cards though. Thanks for the heads up...

The sandisk 8GB is the culprit, did the same thing to me on the MM.
I am still trying to find out what cards to use to avoid banding though

So you have had some issues?
There are a ton of different cards out there just avoid the sandisk ones.

Ok. I'm wanting to buy an MM. This banding issue has me spooked about the purchase. I asked these questions on a very popular Leica forum but did not get a response.
Did your MM start banding out of he box or did it happen over time?
Do you think it was a batch of MMs or is it all of them?
If it happened out of the box then I will test the one I want to purchase before I hand over the $$$$$$$$.
Thanks

I've experienced the SanDisk issue with my M9 and switched to Kingston brand cards. They've been working well since.
