Monochrom with Hoya R72/B+W 093?

Hi All,

Having bought a Monochrom this year and having a background in using Kodak HIE film with red filters in a past life, I was curious to know whether anyone has used the R72 or 093 filters with their MM and if so what their experiences were? Steve Huff briefly mentioned it but only had one image that I could find. Thanks.

hi

a) i'm no experienced IR user, and b) these two were taken late in november with autumn leaf colors instead of green, but the filter was an 092 b&w on a Monochrom.

i guess it's safe to say that there is some IR effect (whitening of grass, leaves etc), similar to the M9, but far less than with an M8.

post your results, please. i'm curious.......

Hi Rick, thanks for your images. There is some effect with the 092 as you say. From the charts I've seen the cut off or pass point of the 092 (695nm) is less than the R72 (720nm) and certainly the 093 (830nm). I suppose the best way to find out is just to buy a filter and try. I know from unmodified cameras that the exposure times increase significantly to the point where a tripod is recommended. Given the high ISO capability of the MM this would not be an issue. Another plus of the RF camera is the fact that even with dark/opaque filters attached it is easy to still compose and shoot. I'll post when I get them. Cheers.

A little more research has revealed that the MM sensor has very little/no sensitivity to any wavelengths past 750nm or so. This means that Heliopan's RG 715, Wratten 89B and maybe 88A as well as the Hoya R72 are the logical starting point.

Here are the most commonly used ir filters and their transmission curves. Quite useful if you know the sensitivity curve of a particular cmos or ccd sensor. Experimenting with PP will make a difference as well depending on the look you want.
