Thanks to all who have answered my previous questions. However one of the answers begs another question.

I want to put a UV or skylight filter on the front of my Summar F-2 50mm col. lens. the answer I got on this was " A36".

Does this mean the filter is a 36mm thread? And if so can a step up ring be had for this to use some of my larger filters? I have had no luck finding anything on ebay

There appear to be threads on the ID of the front of the lens housing. Are these actually threads or machined lines?

If they are not threads does this mean some sort of clamp on filter must be used?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

A36 is a clamp-on. There is an adapter (the SOOGZ, I think) which allows the use of standard 39mm screw-in filters on an A36 lens. It's possible to make a SOOGZ type adapter by gluing a 39mm filter ring to an A36 clamp-on ring.

The SOOGZ costs around $15-20 and allows you to screw in standard 39mm filters. The pic attached below shows the rig I put together using a SOOGZ that allows me to easily change the aperture on an Elmar 50/3.5. The SOOGZ is the bottom left item in the top picture.
