More on the Pentax film camera project

The new Pentax will probably sell well, but more to a different audience than the ones that lurk in this and similar forums. Tik Tok'ers will probably snap it up for a bit.
Which is fine, but I hope they make enough money out of it to go on to bigger and better things. Specifically a new film GR camera, please, cos I want to pretend to be Daido 😉

Here’s hoping that it is a success. I’m in agreement with you when it comes to the core audience for this first offering from Ricoh/Pentax. Ironically a positive response here to this first go-round likely wouldn’t bode well for Ricoh/Pentax.

Also I can't see it being a global success. Japan? Possibly. UK? I doubt there is the same level of interest. Different culture. Kids aren't that interested and even if they do buy one it's unlikely to keep the interest once they have figured out you have to send the film away to be developed. Fans of film photography are the ones who will really appreciate a good quality film camera, and I can't see this being it. It's a cute looking thing, I like the look of it. It's not for me though, maybe if it was full frame I'd reconsider.

One thing we seem to all have overlooked about this new camera.

How much with the darn thing cost?

That more than any other factor, will likely influence how many of us put our hands on our wallets. It certainly would for me, but then I am no longer into buying anything to do with film. not even film.

Nice idea, tho'. For the cashed up minority anyway.

The original announcement by Pentax stated the goal for the price to be 300-400 dollars (us) or less.
So I assume somewhere in between that.

While I am personally not that interested in this particular camera, I hope it succeeds for obvious reasons.

WE certainly discussed it, but nobody knows.

Certainly for me. If it comes in lower than a certain price I have in my head, I'll likely just buy one to check it out.

Me neither, but I do not mind brining a small film camera with me and using it sometimes even if frugally.

Inevitably I am comparing it with the old FF GR1.

It 'looks' bigger than a film GR1 but that could just be my memory.

Also...worth remembering that the GR1 was never 'cheap'.

I'm interested in this and will certainly follow along. The camera is very tiny and looks like it's got a metal top plate.

"17" seems odd; isn't half-frame usually 18x24 mm? Maybe 17 mm is more scanner-friendly.

In person, I expect it will appear "cute".

17x24 will allow two frames to scan at once in the 24x36 mm frame of most minilabs. 18x24mm with even a small frame spacing doesn’t fit without being cropped a bit at the edges. Most minilabs don’t have a half frame setting or frame.

It Looks nicer than I expected. Unfortunately I heard the price will be $450-500 from a dubious source.

I'm not surprised at the price increase given that this has so many complex features, and is definitely not a cheapo beginner camera. Seems to be magnesium alloy and everything. The price actually sounds very reasonable, but is still stretching it for half frame (for me).

I'm not so sure...I mean it is a F3.5 half frame camera with a "bokeh" setting. Who, with any experience at all, will fall for that setting as being something that they need?
