very insightful, thank you mfogiel. now I must try the Zeiss glass, or find a decent comparison test.
Exactly what I was going to do, get a Planar but Meabster who has both set me thinking and I couldn't resist the Hex from here yesterday! I know i'm going to have to try a Planar as well though:bang:

No not at all. Just that the word "better" means different things to different people. Now to me (and only me), a better lens is one that produces an image that I personally like, and I like the older images from the 50's and 60's. So I prefer the vintage lenses like the Summicron DR, first version 50mm Summilux, Jupiter-8, Nikkor 8.5cm/f2 etc., etc. I like the look of mfogiel's 4th picture over his 2nd (great shots BTW mfogielisn't this where taste and snobism take over?

I would suggest the best all around 50 when you have none is the black cron from the early 70's. You can find one for usually around or under $400. Its the perfect balance between old and new look, is very sharp and has the leica fingerprint. Its a fantastic fantastic lens. Affordable and not nearly 1/4 the lens of some of the others out there for 4 times the price. Once you get that lens and see what you like and dislike, you can make a decision about what direction to go in for your next 50, I think that lens is a very very balanced place to start.
I would not want a ZM sonnar as my only 50. I used mine exclusively for 8 or 9 months to get the hang of it and while it is wonderful, its intensely specific and has as much of a fingerprint at 1.5 as it does at f8. There is more bad information about this lens on the net than probably any other, propagated mostly by people who have never or will never use one. It is a VERY sharp lens. Not so great with flare. Very well made and reasonable at its price point. Its super complimentary to a cron but to have just one lens, Id pick the cron.
The M hex is an amazing lens, both the 50 and 90, I dont know what would need to happen for me to sell either. Amazing lenses, sharper than anything under $1k and absolutely the best for flare out of any M mount lenses I have used.
The Elmar-M is another favorite, very specific look, not the best choice for shooting women.
I would spend a little money on the cron and then see what you like. You are practically, in use, getting just about every bit out of that $400 cron than you will out of a much more expensive lens. Most of these lenses have different looks, but they all perform, generally speaking, to within a very small percentage of each other even though there is tremendous price differences between them. If you dont KNOW that you need to have a single $1500 lens, I would start out with a cheaper cron and then spend the money on the more expensive lenses when you are positive thats what you need to get.

i would suggest a 50 summicron (latest) or if you prefer fast, then the 50 sonnar-C or 50summilux pre-asph. Personally, I prefer the 50 Cron and 50 sonnar-c because they are very compact.

Thank's for good words!.. Putin sucks... He was president of Russia, not Ukraine. I don't really like him to put his big nose in the private things of business and a policy of Ukraine.
But that's policy... Let's leave it for those who don't know, what it is... And guys without imagination
Right now, I'm thinking about two lenses... Planar and summicron last one(with hood), or without it...
Could someone take a shot, of how lens(cron and planar) is looking from the viewfinder of Leica(it would be perfect, if 0.85x)?.. I meen with hood... Does it crosses the frame?..
Like here did Avotius with his R2A(BTW, thank's a lot Avotius!

You can safely assume that it will look similar on a Leica as on the R2a.
For example, when I compare M3 and M6 with completely different
magnifications, a given lens will intrude the same amount.
Of course R2a framelines are a little different, etc, but first order, the amount of intrusion will be the same.
Just depends on FOV of lens, and size and length of lens, and distance between lens mount and viewfinder.
Best,
Roland.

You can get a used current summicron AND a zeiss sonnar for that budget.
It's my ultimate pair of complementary fitty's.

cmog10 idea is superb! buy both Sonnar and Summicron within the budget. I remember that Nugard want a sharp one and fast at the same time. It is tough choice. Summilux pre asph E46 costs less in US but the price will blow the budget in Europe
I would go as Cmog10 do. Though I have older Cron and Jupiter 9 already ( I bought Jupiter from Kijev through internet, so it must be a good amount of good well adjusted Jupters there?). I want more so Im looking for Summarit and maybe Lux E46 later or V1. My head is not feeling well as yours

Hi,
For the time being, I recommend you buy a Jupiter 1,5/50 for very little. Then save....
I urge you to save some more and buy what Roland and a couple of others suggested: the v.3 Summilux. Or even better, save even more and get the ASPH; it is the finest all-round 50 I have used. Based on what you wrote, shooting in lower light is something you enjoy: and for such endeavours, you will be wanting without the 1,4.
But don't take my word or anyone else's word for which 50 is the most splendid: check out the m-mount group on flickr for image samples of all of the lenses suggested.
I know the desire to want a good lens right away, but I urge you to save until you can afford a Summilux...my 2 loonies canadian.

I have read through this reviews... And...
Right now, I'm closer to the summicron... I have red plenty of good opinions about this lens... It's smaller then planar... Hell with build-in hood... Or if I find the fifth version, it would be also my pick... BTW flare thing with summicron... Is it SO bad, and rather a widespread thing?..
My next lens is gonna be 50 asph lux... I'm assured of it... But rigth now as a begining of my BIG journey in LEICA-world, I want to go for a standard lens with well-known reputation and thinny that will give me result that I'm looking for... Planar is good lens, but... It's not Leica... Maybe some time later, I will learn that it really doesn't matter, BUT, I will know it for sure...
So... What about flare/glow with 50 summicron(v. 5-6)?..

Nugard, sure Summicron can flare sometimes. I have shot many shots with this and rarely got such flare. It depends on your shooting style. But it is much less flare sensitive than my 35lux pre asph to example. No glow or anything else for Cron.
You can always buy Cron, try it and see. If you dont like, sell this and get Planar. You dont lose much selling of used Cron anyway.
If you have difficult to decide, so decide for one side of the coin and roll it

Well, it's all depends on how I'm gonna buy this lens... It's not too easy to deliver it from US to Ukraine... This summer, I will travel a little... In Germany, Slovakia, Poland, Russia and maybe other countrys... So I have some variants, not very attractible, but they are good in the way of that I can look what I buy...
The thing is, that camera waits for me in Germany, it at my relatives there... It was easier to deliver it to them then to Kyiv...
So I can't even travel and mount lens, that I find, to my camera... So I will have to buy it "blind"...

Hell!.. Last two days I was looking at pictures of planar and summicron, and I like more the picture of planar...:bang::bang::bang: Do I have to buy a "Leica lens" as first lens?..
:bang:
The thing why I didn't buy planar so far, is that I don't like how it looks in the viewfinder...
