So I've found the websites talking about the process but I'm missing something basic.
The first step is to remove the screw and the leatherette disc. I removed the screw but the disc was rather firmly stuck in place. Does this screw out or pop out?
I've used some liquid wrench to loosen it - it turns a bit now - but acts like it isn't threaded. Either it should pop out or I stripped a thread.

Answer: it pops out.
Mine was terribly stuck. It looks like someone had put some glue of some sort down under the screw. I eventually pried it off, but not before removing the leatherette entirely from the cap and scraping the heck out of it.
Oh well, having a lens in focus beats the heck out of good aesthetics.
