Moving from film to digital ! Wich camera ?

Hello everyone !

I'm finally ready to quit 35mm film street photography (not 120) !

I absolutely love the look of Tri-X pushed to 800 and 1600, but I no longer want to scan my negatives on a flatbed, and film is getting more and more expensive !

I've already sold my Olympus XA's and Contax T cameras, but I have no idea what digital Point&Shoot I should purchase !
I just want something small and simple with a fixed 35mm or 28mm lens ! Decent image quality is the priority !

My budget is around 300€ ! Any tips ??

eur300 leaves you with some of small sensor Ricoh RGD models, I think. Not aware of fixed 35mm compacts at this price. How about original Sigma DP1 or DP2?

I would skip point and shoot digital cameras. I think you would be bothered by the blown highlights, aberration from the smaller and wider lens, and color noise in the shadows.

I would buy a used Nikon D200, or Canon 30D for their larger, better behaved sensors.

Don't listen to us! hahah. Seriously though, go to a store and try out a bunch of different cameras, all styles and sizes...p&s, 4/3, DSLR, etc. Hold them in your hands, use them. Bring a SD and CF cards and take some test shots. Any modern digital camera can make great images. It comes down to which is best match for you.

Then once you narrow in on a model or two keep in mind that the previous model is probably still available new, and may be 1/2 price (or less) -- but has similar or identical features to the current model. For example, I bought a new Canon PowerShot S100 last fall for $220 from Amazon. It originally retailed for over $400.

It depends on lens, really. DSLR with a kit 18-something may fit into budget but will not be small (is this really needed?). Both DSLR and S100 with zoom lens don't seem to fit "fixed lens" requirement.

Either requirements have to changed or budget stretched. Small sensor RGD and original DP models still cover all the list.

Try and pick up a little X10, okay its got a zoom lens but the quality is quite good and the viewfinder is great.

I love my Ricoh GRDIV. I am sure you'd be happy with any of the nice compacts these days. As said before, go to a store and handle a few, then find the previous model real cheap used or close out. I got my ricoh new for $100-150 less than what used ones were selling for at the time.
