I've read somewhere that it is possible to have the MP finder put into some of the earlier M's, and I'm wondering if its possible to have the M4-2 finder replaced with an MP .58 finder? I vaguely recall the price being reasonable, but I might be wrong.

I've finally got hold of a 28mm, but need to get a finder for it. If a finder replacement is close to the same as an accessory finder. it might be the way to go, though I am quite fond of accessory finders.

Anyone know?

Cheers,

I have a vague memory of DAG telling me that a MP VF was about 600 USD for the part. Hence if my memory is 'about' right, that's a lot more than an auxiliary finder.

You don't need a .58 VF for 28 frame lines. The standard M4-P - M6 .72 VF has 28mm frame lines. That may be cheaper than a MP VF and especilly .58. Leica doesn't like to sell those since they want you to use the ala cart service

Oh right, yeah that might be cheaper. I realised that maybe the price I'd heard was just to do with the replacement of the condenser lens that was discontinued with the M4-2.

I'd rather use an accessory finder than .72 with 28 lines. The 28 lines just show the edge of the full finder pretty much (which I can do with the M4-2 finder). I like seeing outside the frame. 🙂

Hey Rich,

I'd rather use an external 28 mm finder if I were you - a CV can be had for just a little more than a 100 US, and focussing might not always be needed with 28mm (especially for street shooting, pre-focus & DOF will take care of your needs well enough there) so you'll also be free from the shifting from the VF and the ext finder. Much less expensive, and almost as effective as having the 28 mm in the VF 😀
