Earlier this week on ebay I bid on a used MP but got beat out with less than a minute to go. Today I received a 'Second Chance Offer' on the MP based off my last bid of $1975. I want to get your opinions on this particular camera (the one for auction- not in general. I know it's a nice camera) and the price. You can see the auction here.

Here is a more detailed description of the MP from the seller:

...I purchased the camera used from BH photo in New York several months ago. It is in perfect mechanical condition with no dust issues whatsoever. This is a beautiful camera with very slight brassing (wear) on the film advance lever and flash shoe. As I mentioned in my listing, there is a very slight scratch in the paint near the viewfinder, but there is no damage to the camera itself. The viewfinder is .72. I'm not sure of it's age, the serial # is 2922910.

Thanks!
Nate

be very cautious of Second Chance Offers ...

Go to your Ebay account directly (not through email link) and check your Ebay messages to make sure the actual Second Chance Offer is there first. Only if it is, is it legitimate. If it is not there, it is just someone who got your ID from the bid list and is trying to scam you.

Another reason many sellers are beginning to use private bid lists. Ask him to email you a copy of the B&H receipt if you are concerned, he should be able to produce it if it is only a few months ago.

tread with caution 🙂

As for the merits of the camera itself in question, looks like a good price for that description.

good luck

I would echo Tom's caution of treading slowly. I would also ask the seller why he is not completeing with the winning bidder. It may be that he is worried about sending to China but the winner has good feedback. He can't have bought 2 can he?

I wanted to buy that camera. Looked nice to me. Instead I ended up bidding on a nice M6 classic but lost it at the end. About a day later I found another one in good shape and won it. After I had paid for the 2nd camera, I got THREE 2nd chance offers on the first camera.

They were all fake. Be careful. Follow the above advice. And most of all, stick to your guns. Another camera will come around in a couple days.

Fake

Fake

I looked closer at the email headers and sure enough it's a fake. Oh well, better luck next time. Heres a comparison between a real second chance and a fake:

Thanks for you help!

Nate,

Glad you caught it 🙂 Good luck with your MP search, it will turn up eventually.

Most fraudulent second-chance offers are sent using eBay's "Contact eBay Member" feature. Messages sent that way contain the text "Message from eBay Member" in the subject line, and legitimate second-chance offers do not include that text in the subject line.

It should not be possible for third parties to determine your email address based on the profile information eBay makes public--unless, that is, you have innocently used your real name, business name or email address as your User ID.

I get one or two of those FAKE second chance offers almost every time I bid on a Leica body or lens. The quick check is, that the user name is not the same as the original seller, on some of them. And, of course they ask you to email them directly. As much stuff as I have done on eBay I have never recieved a legitmate Second Chance offer.

Be very, very suspect, of any of these. If you're bidding on Leica's you will get them from scammers.

I did once: that's how I got my Leica t-shirt.

Must be real. That's strange. I always figured the @cgi-ebay-ssl.com ones were fake since it mimics the cgi.ebay.com address with a nice ssl thrown in their to make you think it's secure or something.

I got one from this address: eBay <second-chance@cgi-ebay-ssl.com>. It *wasn't* in my ebay messages either. Who the heck knows.

Crazy people. Ebay has so much fraud going on it's really nuts. They should do something to clean it up.

It's good that this thread is here. I wasn't quite aware of this new 2nd chance scam until just this week. The crap I normally buy on ebay must not be worth enough for scammers to go after.
