I went through the same thing about a year ago. Wanted a Leica that was made especially for me the way I wanted it. I had a MP and didn't think it was anything special over a M6, so sold it and bought a M6. I then decided I wanted AE, so funds available, I ordered an ala carte M7 the way I wanted it. Classic MP style levers, black paint, and vulcanite. Sent it back for a minor repair ( non electrical ) and requested the Millennium blacked out film counter.

MP. MP. MP. Did I say "MP"? MP. But whatever you get, it is cool you are getting it a la carte. I missed the boat on that given the current cost (same camera now as it was five years ago), but my dream one would have been MP in black chrome with green covering and no lettering. Ahhhhhhhhh.................

it's what I feel from the specs. an expensive M6 classic, user wise... the M7 has the advantage of AE, which is a strong differential, at least from my user point of view.

it depends how you shoot. get what suits you best. doesn't matter at all what i think (and not sure why i posted).

If you buy an M7, you will still lust for an MP. So get it over with and just get an MP to begin with. 😉

I have an MP, no desire at all for an M7. If you really, really want AE, then go for an M7, but I if you're after the quintessential Leica, you're going to want an MP.

I did pick up a used M7 and had it about a month when I dropped by the camera dealer who had received a new MP a couple of days earlier. Traded the M7 for the MP.
. . . . . . I had worked through the al la carte menu quite a few times on the Leica website but could never quite pull the trigger.

I had two M7s for a few years then sold one of them and bought two MPs. Without going into the AE of the M7 or its quieter slow shutter speeds, I found I just preferred using the MPs more, maybe because of the simpler electronics in the VF. Maybe something else I haven't pinned down. Whatever, I sold my remaining M7 and bought an M2 last year. Long-term I think an MP is a good buy.

I owned an MP since they first came out in '03, and took it all over, from The Galapagos to Russia and lots of shooting in Florida, but two years ago I got an M7 in addition. Since then I mostly used the the M7 -- about 30-40 rolls through the MP and 125 through M7. It's the convenience. And maybe the novelty (I get bored easy). It did turn me into a bit of a 'happy snapper.'
The postscript is I recently sold both, and use an older M (M5). Don't get me going on the M5 which I view as the best film rangefinder Leica ever made, with the possible exception of the M3 (which I've never used).

This wouldn't happen to be Eric Kim as the OP is it? I see the mp as the most dependable film camera ever made, from other's reviews.

I have both, for simplicity and style, MP is the one. However I do use M7 for complicated lighting situation and wide angel, put on AE and hyper-focal, just click.

here's an idea: before you order a la carte, buy a used M7, try it for awhile, then buy a used MP, and try it for awhile. then you'll know. and you can sell both of the "trial" cameras with little to no loss (think of it as rent).

I think the price for both cameras ordered a-la-carte is identical and in this case I would go for the MP since it seems to hold it`s value better. If buying for practical reasons and actually using the camera then I would buy a used M7 and used MP classic (might take some time to find one) and be done ... 😎

Agreed, I had a beautiful black paint MP but fiddling with the small shutter dial made it awfully slow.
Now have a 0.58 M7 and like it a lot more - but like another poster above I find the M5 the most pleasant M to use.

I'm seriously considering swapping my MP for a M7. For the convenience.
Especially when you could do a-la-carte to tailor the M7 with MP styles.

For me, there's no point in ordering an ALC MP as I really like the standard chrome version as it is. I don't particularly like the look of the standard chrome M7, therefore, if going ALC I'd order an M7 and get it to look as much like the MP as the options permit.
I've had both MP and M7 and found I liked the AE function a lot - both since sold: I use an M2 & M3 instead of the MP and a Zeiss Ikon instead of the M7. I am tempted to one day order the ALC M7 that looks like an MP.
