"Mountain Light" by Galen Rowell. Excellent photography book, emphasizing mountains, expeditions, and serious efforts to get an image. I don't generally go for landscape photos, but his stand out. Mine is the second edition published in 1995, so no mention of anything digital - but he does go up lots of Himalayan peaks and talk about his gear.
I know that years ago Leica was the main sponsor of one of the Canadian Everest Expeditions. Back in the day when Everest was only climbed by climbers, not hikers with deep pockets.
Pat Marrow was the first in the world to submit the tallest peak on each continent and he was a Pentax MX user at the time.

Hello, I was on top of the Mera peak oktober 2005 and took the top foto's with......a Pentax point and shoot digital camera. Only taken away from the warmth of my body for the shot's. It was minus 45 celcius and a hard wind. I could not be bothered taking the extra weight of my slr to the top. Respect to the people who do. By the way mechanical camera's depend on lubricated parts and oil freezes to, so you keep everything close to your body, your water, everything.
Beeing in cold places asks for discipline and minding your camera is part of that.
I haven't ever seen an M8 but if Leica wants to sponsor my attempt to everest here I am.
Take care,
Wim

Some mountaineers like Chris Bonington and Simon Kirwan brought Olympus OM-1 on expedition in the Himalayas.

I took my old Pentax Spotmatic to the bottom of Everest once (to base camp).
