multiple lenses of a certain focal length

I guess I have a thing for the 50mm normal lens. For some reason I've got 8 different 50mm lenses, I'm still on the lookout for at least one more (a CAnon f1.5), and would buy several others if found at a good price. I'm talking about different kinds of 50mm lenses, not all of the same kind. I've got a couple of German, a couple of Japanese, and several Russian 50mm lenses.

I have a lot of 50's too. What is it about that focal length? I have an Elmar-M f2.8, an Elmar f3.5, two Jupiter-8 f2, and a FED Industar-22 f3.5. My favorite is the current model Elmar-M - a really wonderful lens. 🙂

Me too. I must have 20+ of the darn things, FSU, German, Japanese, American. If you include the SLR types there is a bunch more. I also have a few 35mm lenses, but for some reason can not force myself to use them very often. My vision seems to start at 50mm and go out from there. Must be my limited mental capacity, just can not take in very much at one time. 🙄

Yep those pesky 50's are too easy to accumulate.

I have three Jupiter 8's, which were acquired while playing Ukranian roulette. I now have two good ones after learning how to relube them.

Collapsible Industars, one I-22 and one I-50.

Then I bought a Leica and figured I'd need a Summicron. A great lens, but too nice wide open for close-ups of sleep deprived old folks. So, I went looking for a 3.5 Elmar Red Scale and found a 2.8 Elmar that was a third cheaper. It's slightly soft wide open, but I like the look.

Recently I realised that I'm more of a 50mm guy. Tried the 35mm, but it just doesn't "fit" me. Most of my 50mm shots are composed better, and have a "feel" that I prefer. Our Peter is great with 35mm lens, but I just can't seem to "get it". I'm more for people photography, shallow DOF, etc. - and that's where 50mm shines. Going narrower (teles, like 75, 90 or even 135) doesn't cut it, either. 50mm is "just right" for me.
I've got a collapsible Summicron, collapsible Summitar (great lenses, both of them, Summitar has that very "old-fashioned" look), Juipter 8 in LTM and Kiev mount (another grat lens), FED 50/3.5 collapsible (which I should use more), and two Nikkors in 50mm (SLR).
And I have a couple of 50mm equivalents in MF size, too - 90/3.5 on a Koni Omega, Tessar 75/3.5 on a Rolleiflex, several "normal" lenses for my Speed Graphic....
Each has its own character. So far, my favorites are the Summicron, with Jupiter 8 a close second, in 35mm format, and the Konica Hexanon 90mm in MF. That lens is really nice - and has the advantage of bigger negative....

Did I mention I have another one on the way? A CV Nokton 50/1.5? 😀

I've just counted 20 50'ish SLR lenses in various mounts. 1.2's, 1.4's, 1.7's, 1.8's, 1.9's, f2's, f2.8's which also includes a macro lense. I'm still waiting for a good deal on a 1.7 Planar for Yashica/Contax.

Outside of the non-interchangable lense RF's, in LTM I have a J8, I-22, pre-war Elmar, Summar, and a I-61LD coming with the Fed 2. In Kiev/Contax, I have a J8 and a Helios-103 (53/1.8), and finally an odd-ball Cintar for the Argus.

Interesting to note that of my fixed-lense RF's, only the Retina & Century Graphic 35 have 50mm lenses. Most are 45mm, and the Canonet's have 40mm's. The Ward's 550/Konica Auto-S has a wierd 47mm lense.

I have Jupiter 3, Jupiter 8, and a sweet Industar 50 collapsible. I use the all, but I really like the I-50. There is something about that on the Leica IIIc that is a real treat!

RF 50s: 3x Jupiter-8 M39, 2x J-8M (kiev-mount), 1x Helios-103 (Kiev mount), 3 or 4x I-26m, 2x I-61L/D, 1x I-50 (rigid), 1x I-22, Canon 50/1.8 II;
SLR (I'm not looking up the details on those now): Pentax SMC M 50/1.7, a Konica Hexanon AR 50/1.7 (or was it 1.4?), a Yashica M42 50/1.8, 3 or 4 Russian M42 Helios 50s (different varieties), M42 Schacht Travenar 50/2.8, M42 Volna-9, CZJ M42 50/1.8, K-mount Carena 50/1.8, and a few more I probably forgot...

Most of those I did not get on purpose, though - they were just body-caps on cameras I wanted... 😉

They do multiply. Last night I was looking at a gathering of my 35mm rangefinders. I have one FED 2 user and another I plan to send to Oleg (Joe's old FED) and, now that I find that Oleg works on old Leicas, my Leica IIIc. Between them there is a Jupiter 12 (35mm), Jupiter 9 (85mm) and 3 50s -- Jupiter 8, Industar-50, and a 50mm Summitar. I plan to use all three. That doesn't include the drawer with another 3 50s that came on my FED 2s and Zorki 6 -- 2 Industar 61s and a chrome Jupiter 8. Six 50s! The best I-61 will go on the Zorki at some time (after it is repaired) and go to a good home. The chrome J-8 is in pieces and I haven't figured out how to put it back together yet (that will happen). It has a lot of cleaning marks and the other I-61 has some cleaning marks. I don't know what will happen to them. Yet.

In reviewing the original question, it seems maybe Frank directed it at multiple lenses of the same focal length for the same system... Which "duplication" I've always tried to avoid. Since I've long had a 35 'cron for my Leica, I didn't consider getting another 35 for my Leica. But in recent years, thanks to hanging around Photo.net and RFF my attention has been drawn more strongly to the variations in *character* that exist in different lenses of the same focal length.

So now I think it's not such a silly idea... or wait, horrible thought, it's part of the forum GAS conspiracy! Yeah, 35 'cron ASPH, yeah f/1.2 Nokton, yeah Zeiss Biogon! 😀

Gordy, big improvement on the avitar :>) You now have more credibility as a bulbhead! I too, have many, but not too many 50mm lenses. I am only going to mention the LTM ones here,with one exception . I have 2 J8s, a black export(1979) and an aluminiun one (1964), a collapsible summicron M mount(1955), a collapsible summar( came on my 1936 Leica IIIa), a collapsible Industar 10( it came on my 1934 Fed 1), a collapsible fed(industar22 ?), 2 induster 26s, and a Tokyo Optical Simlar f1.5( this lens came on a Leotax (Leica IIIf copy) I bought for USD 50 about 15 years ago. One of these lenses just sold on ebay last week for USD565 for lens only).I like all of thses lenses for different reasons, but my two favorite ones are the J8 and the Summicron.

Does anyone know of a great 40-45mm ltm lens? My favorite "standard" lens on my Minolta SLRs is a Rokkor 45mm. I won't call it a pancake, but it is quite compact. One of the reasons I like the I-50 collapsible is its compact nature. My Color-Skopar 28mm is very compact, so can anyone help here?
