musings about my own road map...

yeah, just after 11 p.m. and i have no desire to go to bed...t.v. is lousy too...

what to do?
i know...think about my road map...which lens do i get or get rid of? what lenses do i eventually want by the end of this adventure?

first off...i'm pretty sure the zoom is not long for my camera bag...as good as it is and as much sense as it makes to have one lens in place of a few...it just does not fit my way of doing things.

the 60 macro? had it and returned it...don't really need a macro (or pseudo macro)...it's plenty sharp and works ok but close is not my thing.

i am leaning more to the 56/1.4...man, a fast 85 fov lens...should be great for portraits and the way i see the world should be long enough for any of my telephoto needs.

the hard decision regards the 14...21 fov...my favourite image was made by a 21 (but on the 1.5 crop rd1)...so maybe not fair to look at it the same as on the fuji. none the less, i do like wides and am enjoying the 18 much more than most 28s i've used in the past. plus, the 14 should be available earlier than the 56 so going wider rather than long meets my selfish need for new toys.

and what about that 27/2.8 pancake? 40 has got to be my favourite lens of all time...no matter a true 40 fov or on a crop making it more of a 60...i like them both. but...do i need a 27 and a 35? 40 and 50? the fuji 35 has got to be one for the record books...so very nice...damn.
yeah, 14 and 27 (21/40) what a lovely street combo.

i could go on...but most of you all stopped reading a few lines ago...right?

Joe, I'm also looking forward to the 27/2.8. Here's the kit I'm looking forward to (my roadmap?): X-pro1 with 18 and 35 lenses; X-E1 with the pancake. I look at it like this: For a long day out on the streets, I'd take the X-Pro1 with the 18 (28mm) mounted, and the X-E1 with the 27 pancake (41mm). To me, the 28/41 is a 'natural' pair. 28 is wide enough to capture the surroundings but not so wide that I have to get right up into people's faces to capture their expressions. The 40mm is such a perfect all-round FL.

14/27 is only lenses I am still waiting in 2013...

In 35mm my favorite combo was 21/40 on Leica CL. One on each CL.

I don't have a big selection in 35mm RF; 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm. I would wish for a 28mm and/or a 15mm. I also tend to see wider. Even in SLR, like you, I have been tending away from zooms. Years ago, I thought they were the cat's meow. I no longer think so, but even so, one of my kits is 3 zooms from 18mm to 150mm.

But lens selection is such a personal think I would never fault anyone for their preferences. Look forward to seeing some of your photos with those lenses.

Is what you have limiting you? You should be able to determine what you want/need once your current gear limits you form taking the photos you want. If you're not being limited by what you have, just go out and shoot. Try not to let GAS get the best out of you.

not really...the fujis offer very similar quality of image, at a lesser price, offer more flexibility and i aleady own them.

I'm an X100 owner, so that complicates things. Speaking in FF 35mm equivalents, I'm naturally drawn to the 35mm angle of view, but it's quite close to the 50, so it's hard to justify carrying both on a regular basis. And yet, the 35/1.4 is a VERY good lens, so it's hard to leave it at home.

Ultimately, I know I'm going to end up with the 14mm for sure. I want to eventually jettison the 5D Mark II for my wide angle stuff, and the 14 is a good way to get there.

I'll probably sell the 60 once the 56/1.4 comes out. I don't need 1:2 "macro", and as good as the 60 is, I'd rather have f/1.4. I have an old Fujica 55/1.8 that I occasionally use on this camera, and it's stellar.

The 18 is a keeper; I'm finding that the 28 equivalent is close enough to 35 that I'm happy, but far enough away from 50 (equiv) that I can carry the 35 f/1.4, too.

So ultimately I'll probably end up with:

X-Pro1
14 f/2.8
18 f/2
35 f/1.4
56 f/1.4

Toss in the X100 for off camera flash or when I just want a small camera, and I'm set.

If you don't think the zoom is going to get used, get rid of it. I recently simpified my Canon kit to 2 lenses. A 17-40 L lens and a 50mm lens. Before doing that, I had 6 lenses, some of the best Canon lenses available. After cutting my kit down to the gear that I found I shot the most, life did get a lot simpler. That's just all my opinion though. 😀

i do plan on selling the zoom...i've been waiting on fuji to hear more about the 'squeek'...and today there is a firmware update for the 18-55 on the fuji website.
