Musings about using Nikon Rf's

Rather than the SP or S2 - go for a S3, it has the 35 frame in it already and you dont have to shift the eye to catch the 28/35 frame as on the SP.

Tom, I wear glasses and was planning to use accessory finders on the camera I find, regardless if it is an S2 or SP. I have a hard time with small viewfinders and the 28/35 on the SP might not cut it for me, at least not for the 2.8cm frameline. The benefit of the SP finder for me would be the 10.5cm frameline, another favorite lens of mine. This would be the only "problem" with an S2, but it happens to be perfect for 50mm lenses. I love the 1:1 finder and think that shooting with both eyes open all day is good headache prevention, vice squinting in a .72 or .68 (M9) Leica finder.

How is the eye relief on the S3 then for eyeglass wearers? I don't know anyone locally who owns one for me to handle but I'm certainly open to suggestions!

Something tells me I'll wind up with an S2 that has a 5cm lens "glued" to it and another Nikon RF for use with other focal lengths.

Phil, the S3 has the 105 finder in it. The eyerelief with the 35 is not great- with glasses you have to scan the field a bit - or just ignore it and get that extra bit in - can be cropped in LR or darkroom when required.
The S2 is great, but feels a bit "rougher" than a well seasoned S3 or SP - and shutter speed dial is a bit of a pain. Way to easy to put your finger against it and get truly strange speeds! This said I have multiple S2's and with the 50 - there is nothing like it!

Well Tom, it had to happen.

We had to disagree about something, eventually.

I don't like the S3 much due to its often flare prone framelines and the lack of parallax correction. I MUCH prefer shooting a SP. I find the SP a lot more useful to me.

Well all I have to say is that I'm enjoying my S2 with the 35mm f2.5 on it with
a 35mm Leica viewfinder on top. I do get lot's of looks with this combo and
when people look in the viewfinder they say it's really clear, (I did clean it
out myself) the only problem I have is I have to find a good place that does
good developing, this CVS stuff is pretty bad at times. Here's a pic of a Hare Krishna
celebration they had a few weeks ago will add more later.

Range, you have to do it yourself. It's easy! When you manage to clean out the viewfinder of your S2, developing a film should be really easy for you and takes, including washing, only 30 minutes.

I agree with you that an S2 with a good 35mm finder is all one needs.

Erik.

Erik,
If I had the space I would do it, but I live in a small apartment and that
would be hard, the rangefinder cleaned out great it's really clear and they
do focus like a charm when redone, so my advice is get those guy's cleaned
out.

Range,
Chelsea Photographic Services on W 24th in Manhattan. That's the lab I've heard folks talk about even there are a few others in the city.
Other than that, there are a bunch of folks in the city who do their own processing and might be willing to throw a roll or two in the soup in exchange for beer (I'd do this if i were set up to develop but I'm not even moved up yet.)

That's a photo of Tom A's lenses, so you'd better arrest him too :p

I will be in good company in jail

Well, Jon we should be able to take all our lenses and cameras to the jail too - then a brief stint would allow us to test them in peace!

Eric, NOW you tell me! I should sell all the rest and stick to the S2 and 35 finder on top only? Goes against everything I believe in - everything in duplicate, triplicate has always been my motto!

Stephen, I like the S3 because I dont have to shift my eye for the 35 frame. Ok, not a "biggie" and I do use 35's on the SP too - though they are most often used for either the 28 or 85/105.

It is one Rf lens that I have not tried. Interesting and supposedly extremely good. On the other hand - I think the Nikon F with a 55f3.5 Micro Nikkor serves me well. You also need some kind of collar for the Rf Micro - which costs a fortune too. Good that I am not a collector!
