Canon LTM My Canon 85mm f1.5 is Here!

Nice lens and lots of glass. Kevin is correct Canon only made one hood for the 85mm f/1.5 lens. Actually, there is one marked SERENAR and the other CANON LENS, which is what you have. The filter interests me, as they are damn hard to come by. What is the configuration of the wording on the side of the filter? Canon did make the 85mm filters in coloured stacks both for the Serenar and Canon lens marked lenses. The hood was actually stored in its own leather case and never reversed over the lens as some of the 85mm, 100mm and 135mm lenses could do. Neat outfit and you will never lose on your purchase of an original hood. Cheers Peter

The Black Bakelite Case says "Canon FILTER for CANON LENS f:1.5 85mm" "MADE IN JAPAN"

The filter says "Canon 58mm Y1 1.5X" "JAPAN"

Yes, I was looking the the Summarex Hood, KEH had one in BGN condtion for $225, so I decided to go with Kevin. He was cheaper by 50 Bucks, and it's the original hood!
 
The case is correctly marked for your lens but the filter is a later style that came out in 1968, probably for the R series lenses and maybe others. Anyway it fits that is the most important part. The original hood was only a slip-on or push-on style as you have found out.

Actually the Bakelite Case came with the UV filter, which is on the lens, when I sent it out for CLA. When I get it back, I'd like to ask you about the UV filter, and also if you can date the lens, that would be great, as well. Regards, -Dan
 
Thank You Airds! Just bought it. Interestingly, it is marked " CANON LENS 85mm f1.5" so it's got to be an original filter for the lens 🙂

Nice win and yes, it is an original filter from 1953. In my book I have an alphanumeric code beside the filter (T58B). The T58B relates to the type of filter in 58mm size that was produced in that year for that lens and so on. The T58A is the same as the one you bought but has "SERENAR" instead of CANON LENS and comes from 1952.The filters that Canon produced for the 85mm f/1.5 lens were all marked as Airds example. The one included in the case is a later version which came out in 1968 (T58F), so you can replace this filter with the green one although when first sold separately the case was green and the black case held the UV filter.
The T1 85mm f/1.5 lens matched the T58A filter while the T2, T3, & T4 lenses all had the T58B filters. The later 85mm f/1.8 black lens had the T58C to T58F filters. All were screw-in. Damn just ran out of chalk so lesson finished....;-))))) Peter

I had noticed - thought it'd be of interest - so good for you.

It would have fitted my EF 50mm f1.4, though I've found other old Canon vintage 58mm filters a bit heavy for the auofocus system .....

ps The same seller has a Canon pale yellow filter but in 55mm - ie ideal for the 50mm f1.2 ......

Well, I guess I'm on a vintage filter binge, I just bought that one, as well 🙂 I already have the Slimline 55mm Canon UV and the R1, as well, for my Canon F1.2

Coming up soon. Got a roll of +X in finish off in my M2, then I'll be running two rolls of Eastman XX, and two rolls of Eastman +X, all together. I did carry the lens on a body for the first four or five days that I had it, and I think I got some pretty interesting stuff with it. Nice compliment to my Canon F1.2
 
Woah! Dan! Your 85mm f/1.5 set is really coming together!

I, too, like to get matching accessories if they are available, be it for phones, or whatever. However, I don't really know what to do with old leather lens cases as the leather and foam falls apart pretty easily in my climate. Shame.

Anyway, don't keep us waiting too long for the pictures now! I'm really tempted to go for one of these but I don't really need another 85mm lens. Good thing they are not easy to come by. We'll see....

HI Nokton,

Afraid the filter stack will only fit the 41mm Drop-in filters from 1950-52. The filter stack for the 85mm lenses are marked on the top "CANON for FILTER CANON LENS f : 1.5 85mm". Stacks of these filters I would rate as R2 (see my book for ratings). Keep the stack as you can add the drop-in filters as they appear at the odd time on eBay. None of the filter stacks ever contained the UV filter it was always sold separately. Peter
 
I'm down to the last ten frames on my fourth roll; I'll try to finish it today, and then I can make my B&W run. ;P

BTW it should be back from it's CLA at Essex Camera Repair next week, so then I'll start using it again. I've had to be content with my Elmars and Summicrons.
 
Ran some film last night, two rolls of Eastman +X (shot in M2), and two rolls of Eastman XX (shot in M5). Film was processed in a Nikor tank, in ADOX Borax MQ developer. Took a quick eyeball this morning, and the 85mm f1.5 is indeed a great lens. Both cameras -seem- to handle the paper-thin DOF with no problems whatsoever. The bokeh is amazing, very painterly IMO. Specific focus tests with metal ruler, and cigarette lighter on my back-deck (ala Roland!) look spot-on, even at the minimum focus setting on the lens, with both bodies. I am pleased.

EDIT: My Minolta Scanner is not talking to my hardrive (it keeps telling me the door needs to be open but it is ARRRRGGGG), so I will run these four rolls to a local lab, and they will scan them for me. Then I will add them to our XX Flickr site.
