A few lines to show my first "coffee" development, just done as an entertainement. (600 ml water, 8 sp coffee, 5 sp sodium carbonate, Ilford hp5+ @800ASA, I know is not the best starting point but it was a testing roll I've done trying hip shots):

That’s very good for the first go, I get bags more grain than that

Somebody should do a test on different brands of coffee, and with Folgers and Maxwell House now marketing various blends, Starbucks and other premium bblends on the shelves, fresh roasted but not yet ground vs. canned, etc., this should be as important as choosing Rodinal or D-76.

The best camera is one that still works!
I find that I need a little less sugar in my Rodinal Al ... not quite as bitter as the D-76!

I did some cafinol experiments myself . . . but not nearly as carefully. I just brewed some over-strong coffee, put in some washing soda (*not* baking soda), and developed as regular.

you can really develop with coffee???
seriously, excuse my ignorance. i'm about to get my first film M and was planning on using XP2 so i could take it somewhere for quick and dirty developing.... but if i could do it at home with coffee, this could be a hoot! beginner pics only, so i don't think i'll be flubbing up any masterpieces.
can somebody point me towards the real recipe and dummy directions?

It would only work properly with traditional films. not C-41 films.

That of mine was:
3 double espressos
2 tbl spoons washing soda
320ml water
10 min pre-soak
30 min starting at about 35c then allowed to cool, agitating every 2.5 min
stopped with a bit of de-scalar, fixed with hypo
now I would start at 22c and stand for 60min agitating after 30min, or better yet get Keith’s recipe as it’s a lot better than mine.

I tried a drop on a film leader (Fuji superia) and actually it did develop it

it seems that i'm being told to start with XP by my mate who isn't really keen on trying to find a portion of our already small apartment.... my fault, really. i moved into a bachelor's apartment with all my girly stuff

I think (and am pretty sure) that any developer that works with traditional should pretty much work with any film (even C41 color negs or E6 slides or Kodachromes) because they all have pretty much same kind of silver stuff in them, that can be developed to a B&W negative with a B&W developer.

In fact you could develop with any substance that can reduce silver halides to metallic silver.... I wouldn't use this process instead using a commercial (or commercial self made), complexity is exactly the same, prices aren't high enough to discard them and results using this homebrew coffee based developer could lack reproducibility/control/quality.... it's nice as enterteinment, demonstration or curiosity.
The recipe I've used is similar to the one mentioned before in the thread.
