My first images with a Leica M10

I am encouraged by some images that I have taken with the Summilux 75, and I will continue to use it with the M10. My back-up is the M9 with a Summicron 35mm replica. I am covered well with these two lenses. While the M9 "tries to relax" from a photo taken, I can use the M10 for several back to back shots.

I forgot to use Live View to nail the focus.

Such barges damaged the three mile bridge that is still being built (at a cost of $500m)

Here are some photos that I took today on Pensacola Beach. It required a long detour from Pensacola due to the damaged three mile bridge. We stayed at this place maybe 5 minutes to take these 7 photos. There is a "cold front" and our high will be 77F today.


M10 with 75 Lux: I added some contrast and saturation, but not much.

I often drive to Joe Patti's Seafood Market to take photos outdoors of boats and birds there. It was hit badly by Hurricane Sally, and it closed until a few days ago. I drove there this morning and I used the M10 with the 75mm Summilux, plus the M9 with the 35mm Summilux.

Raid – I offer this in good faith and hope it isn't taken as snotty comment; I think your files of boats in bright light will benefit from less exposure. Whilst I don't have access to your RAW capture, it looks to me like you are blowing highlights. I see it in the boat whites, and the highlights of the wooden planks [which look severely clipped to me], the rope edges too.

The M10 sensor can produce lovely files, but as discussed in previous exchanges; it can have an abrupt collapse in it's highlight cliff. I too have photographed in ultra clean coastal light and needed considerably less exposure than first thought [to protect highlights]. Enjoy your camera [and it's friendly histogram].

Raid – It only occurred to me after I posted my comments that your experience with the M8 might be over-influencing an expose-to-the-right tendency carried over to the M10. I still use [when Covid lets me back to my photography subjects], and still like the files from my M8, but the M10 sensor doesn't need the ETTR attention required by the M8 [especially in the good light you've worked with].

I only use manual settings, and in the example scenes you photographed; with the M10 I'd have scanned the scene and recognised that e.g. bright boat highlights, and back lit planking, would require pulling back the exposure to guarantee details in bright zones be retained.

I will do more thinking next time I will use my M10 in such light.
The M8 and the M9 expose very well easily.

I have taken many photos with the M10, and most came out looking very nice without any PP.

This morning I set my M10 to 2/3 under-exposure, and I took some photos at Joe Patti's. I converted DNG files to jpg files without any additional PP done.

Do the images need some "punch" from extra contrast maybe?

Converting image files from DNG to JPG involves built-in PP somehow. I see the DNG images as "dull" as they have been under exposed by 2/3 of a stop. The JPG images look brighter to my eyes.

I view it differently in my case. The M10 is another camera and it is not meant to replace my M9. I will use both cameras.

I wish I'd been able to do that. But to get the M10, I had to sell my beloved M9-P.


I think it was worth it. Raid, excellent results there.

I am using the M9 much less often these days.
I take a few shots with the M10, followed by one photo with the M9.
If the M9 requires a major repair, I will not get it repaired.
