Hey all!

I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this trade to see if I'm crazy for wanting to go through with it. Assume that all items listed below are in mint condition.

I get:

  • 50 Summilux - ASPH (11891) -- still under warranty for 2.5 years with Leica
  • 35 Summicron - ASPH (1187)

Both come with original packaging and accessories.

He gets:

  • 50 Noctilux f1 E58 -- no lens hood or box ... Just generic back/front capt.
  • 28 Elmarit - ASPH - Still under Leica warranty. Just purchased in Nov 2012. Comes with all original materials.

Thanks in advance!

I would check new prices for the 4 items, and then decide.
If you come out "OK", then go with it if you prefer the 35 over the 28 perspective. Both 50mm lenses are awesome.

I didn't run the detailed numbers John, but at current market and what I remember that seems like a fair trade (depending on lens condition, etc.).

But you also have to consider your own utility of the lenses.

The 50 ASPH lens is much more versatile than a Noctilux.

And you have to decide whether you'll get more mileage from a 35 vs a 28.

And yeah, check for market value equivalency.

Why is a 50/1.4 "much much" more versatile than a 50/1? The 50/1 also works well at 1.4. Is it the ASPH magic?

It is hard to determine fair market value price for the noctilux with the limited data on eBay, but it seems to sell for around $5,500. The elmarit goes for $1,700.

On eBay, the 35 'cron is around $2,500 and the 50 'lux (sold out new) is around $3,200.

So, my lenses are worth $7,200 and his are worth $5,700. But, again who knows if the noctilux is actually worth that much. Also, the 50 'lux may be selling at a premium right now because it is presently back-ordered.

I'm referring to size and weight.

I'd much rather lug a 50 ASPH around all day than a Noctilux.

The reverse for late night though.

I d say keep what you have

If you feel the urge to try the asph, he should top you off by one grand ( at least) that noct is expensive, lux asph have been coming down recently, good copys from 2700 - 3000 around here, where a noct (any version) starts at 4 grand

Financially speaking, you are at a loss

The noctilux itself is enough to pay for the 50 lux asph and the 35 cron asph

You're losing a lot of money there. Don't do it.

If you're so desperate to get rid of your lenses, sell them and buy the said lenses and I'm sure you'll have enough left to buy one more (cheaper) used lens

I suspect also that the newer lenses are further up the depreciation curve and will lose more money over time than the Noctilux which should hold its value

Noctilux is much harder to find than a Summilux. Also 28/50 combo is more versatile than 35/50. If u feel the Noct is too heavy for everyday carry, you can always add a Elmar-m 50/2.8 anytime, USD1000 only.

I wouldn't do it on principle.

if he is a good enough friend you can sell him the nocti for what you paid for it. if he's not that good of a friend he can sell his lenses and buy one from ebay or keh.
