cool
I believe I will leave & use the lens as is now. I think for short distances it works and I will rarely or never shoot further than 5-10m at f/1.5. It's really sharp at f/4.
Even the corrected J3+ in his shots look miserable at the far side wide open - no need for me to pay 500€ more on a reboot of that lens
(I rather get another 35mm)

SOOOO ...
HA!
I used some drops of Isopropanol on the aperture collar and I could turn it around about 90° - it's still brutal stiff. This has two results: 1) this is enough so I could correct its position, 2) the aperture setting is absolutely free now.
Then I cleaned the threads combining the focus and the lens module and lubed them and somehow this must have freed another turn or two deeper inside. NOW the lens has a correct focus in the short ranges and also almost hits infinity. YAY
Perfect J3 now and I'm able to go to 70cm. Take that internet!

Even I feel relief now!!!
After I burned curtain in my FED-2 by J-3 wide open under very bright light, I have fear to return it to Leicas. I could replace curtain by DIY on FED-2, but not in Leicas.
What do you think about Industar-26M to be modified for closer distance? Is the method you have described will be the same? I read through it twice, but I'm not good on it to fully understand...

Well I wasn't worried, I'm just happy that out of dumb luck it was way easier than I anticipated. That lens isn't that hard to work on when you have a M9 for the adjustments.
Thanks for the reminder with the burned curtain! I need to be more careful about that stuff.
I don't think the Industar will be terribly challenging. It might be better to check for a guide or at least some pics for the dis-assembly.
The close and infinity focus stop on the J3 were just a long cutout in the outer cam module, so actually super easy to modify (extending the cutout). I've read that with the J8 it's two screws inside the focus cam so actually a bit harder to do.
I plan to do my J8 next since it also has back focus on the M9 (I changed the RF on my M2 back when the J8 was my only lens on my first Leica).
In the meantime I'm drooling in anticipation for that 35mm summarit in the mail. How is your Elmarit 28?

Ok .. this is for the Industar 61 not 26M but it might not be a big difference:
http://www.pentax-manuals.com/repairs/i6ldservice.pdf
You'd need a lens spanner to open it but the good news is there is also just a cutout for the focus stops.
[EDIT] Ok - here is one for the 26M in German:

easier that the 61 and the J3 I think and also a cutout for the focus stops!

Thanks Kay, now I understand!
I have done cleaning/lubricating, shimming on J-3, J-8 and I-26M, but never think of close focus modification. Because I don't really need 50mm on M, I-26M will be enough and I like this lens rendering and "safe" maximum aperture.
I don't have Elmarit 28, yet. After getting of Summarit 35 I have no interest in Summicrons, Summiluxes, so good the lens is.

I'm really interested to see how the summarit compares on film to the summicron v4 I had before and against the cron-c 40 on sensor. I think it's a cool lens but well see. I can always resell.
So here is the J3 at close focus with a higher f stop and flash .. sharp enough I'd argue:

I like contrast on this and it is sharp.
How close the portrait picture could be taken with this lens now? Head and shoulders?

Well with this lens you always need to "help" the contrast a bit as you know
Yes - head & shoulders fill the height of a frame in landscape orientation
