Today, I won a nice, fast lens to use with my Nikon D700 and my film bodies, as a result of one more "playful bid" on eBay. Nice, because it was unexpected and inexpensive (compared to the cost of this thing new).

It's in a box, seems to be of relatively recent coinage, and, of course, has a focal length quite favored by the folks who shoot meterless Leicas around here.

Did I mention it was fast? And nicely inexpensive too... 🙂

Just bear with me. I got Xmas way in advance... and for a lot less than expected for a thing like this one! 😉

It was a nice, probably old version (it has a window) 50mm f1.4, in box, for AF Nikon bodies. It may be shipped from New Mexico today. Imagine... if you were a lens, and got boxed in a sunny, warm place, only to be taken out of the box in a cold, snowy town.

Thermal shock! 😱
 
If it is the 50/1.4 af you will enjoy it. It is sharp with snappy focus on my D700. It does focus faster than the new 50/1.4 afs g lens.

If your lens is coming from Santa Fe, it is coming from a colder, snowier place than Chicago. i lived in Santa Fe for a couple of years and it always snowed more there than in my hometown in northern Indiana and it was always colder in winter there too!

Some times, when I wake up in the morning in a great mood and looking forward to the day, it's because I had a dream in which I picked up that lens for that much...

Imagine the possibilities!

BTW... thanks for shattering the romantic image I had of NM, Chris. I guess I'll have to live with the fact that there are snowier places than IL... And nice shot! 😉

It's amazing how people think because this is the 'desert SW' that's it hot and sunny. It's only a desert below about 6000', higher than that it gets pretty wet. Mainly because the rain doesn't evaporate before it hits the ground. I believe the southermost ski resort in the US is Ski Apache at Ruidoso, which has been hammered the last couple of weeks. Something like 3-4 feet of snow. Santa Fe and northward has been getting hit with snow the last 2 weeks. The Four Corners area has been hit. The crest of the Sandia Mountains overlooking Albuquerque probably has 3 feet of snow on it. It's amazing what happens at 10,000 feet above sea level.

Well... I guess I should thank people for the geography lesson. I'm one more victim (or willing participant) of the popular imagery of the NM state. 🙂

Now... allow me to add that I do understand it very well. I do get a bit annoyed when people, upon learning I live near Chicago, say things like "it gets cold up there, right?"
 
I went to boot camp in Great Lakes, leaving from northern New Mexico, and I definitely thought it was colder and more miserable. Something about the wind blowing the rain and snow sideways directly into your face, maybe? Or maybe just having to stand in formation and march outside in the worst of the weather.

New Mexico is very beautiful when it snows, even if people are surprised it isn't a hot, dry stretch of sand all year.
