Business trip (3): In Taipei
Business trip (3): In Taipei
In Taipei since yesterday. This morning, still in jet-lag, post-processed the above pictures, and some photos taken going out for dinner last night:
The "Snake Alley":
Visiting a local temple:
I'm quite pleased how the M handles hand-held in the dark ... No flash in my bag in case you wonder.
Note that what appears as being slightly unsharp in pic #2 above is the Lux's glow wide open ...

Wow Roland, this is the first time I saw this thread! I like the SF photos, and the ones from China and Taiwan. The selfie is great too! A friend of mine just got a monochrom and I'm urging them to post their first selfie!
You should buy my I-50 12-blade UltraFlare 2.8 to see how the sensor deals with it!

Thanks, Ted, Lynn and Helen. Ted, my freezer is still well stocked. Once the digital honeymoon is over, I'm planning on using film in parallel for B+W.
Today, it's hot and humid in Taipei. Sun morning outside and Chinese Mango ice cream makes for a perfect breakfast:

Thanks Keith. I mostly treat her like a film Leica and she seems to enjoy it 🙂
My technical lessons learned on this trip:
- It's a sturdy camera; after > 20k flight miles, in backpack with laptop, schlepped around everywhere, including taxi, bus, subway and train, everything is still perfect, including the RF alignment.
- Great low light camera with the two fast lenses that I used.
- Most photos require only minimal post-processing. All I do typically, is to add a yellow filter for B+W conversions (and preview like this in camera), crop and twist a bit, sometimes pull the shadows and add a contrast curve.
- The 75 Lux does well on the 240. No problem focusing without magnifier, etc. Better 75mm frame-lines than any other Leica that I have used. Some people complain about softness, but Big Bertha does well enough for me; below a crop of the Forbidden City photo above.
- Never delete a photo when chimping ..... (please remember that I'm a digital nooby). I can recommend CardRecovery to recover an erased Flash drive in the road ... :bang:

PS / for the mods: RFF now seems to limit (and autoscale) photo inline postings to 1000 pixel on the wide side, which is annoying. And I wonder how much the picture degrades when JPEGs are down-scaled via html. Not really motivating for a picture poster, I feel.

I usually prefer portraits in B+W. Sometimes I'm not sure though, the M does good with skin tones.

That Color Skopar 50/2.5

As a side note, the 50mm Color Skopar is often called soft. And it's true, if I compare infinity shots with 50/1.5 Nokton or Summicron, the Skopar has just slightly less resolution. Note that when you close down, it also shifts backwards like many 50mm lenses.
Its has very pretty OOF rendering however, handling is great, and for the above type of photos it sure is sharp enough. An example crop:

I don't understand the rap on the 50 Skopar either. In my experience, it's plenty sharp, more than a match for my scanning and developing skills at any rate. Your photo above also shows that the lense is quite sharp. It also illustrates another reason I like the Skopar: it renders just as well with color as with black and white.
