My M2 is seriously messed up....example photos...

My M2 almost got thrown into the Mekong River the other day......As I was shooting a festival it locked up after just 4 shots.....it wouldn't wind, I couldn't release the shutter or anything, at first I was like, WTF, then I calmed down and just dealt with it......so I just rewound the film and figured that maybe the film canister was bad....(I was trying to thnk positive)......

then I put another role of film in it and shot.....well here are the results...the first 2 shots on the roll look normal, and then this is what the rest of the shots look like......the strange thing is, some of the "capping" ( not sure if that is the right word or not) is on the left and some is on the right......I have inspected it today with the body cap off and fired it at every speed and everything seems fine....the only strange thing is, on speeds 30 and 15 I can hear a winding noise after I shoot.....I can only here that noise on those two speeds......

here are some examples...... any suggestions/thoughts what the problem might be.....

I am not even worried about the out of focussing problems that I was having, I feel like just sending it off to Youxin and see what he can do with it.....I will be going to Myanmar in 6 weeks so I have time to hopefully get it fixed.....any explanations/suggestions/comments are appreciated......

My M2 locked up. Apiece of the material that makes it lightight near the shutter had come loose. Probably the same for you, jamming the curtain(s).
It will need a service..

The dying bee noise is normal after the shutter release for speeds of 1/15 (or 1/30?) and longer. I think it's odd that Michael doesn't hear the buzz for 1/8, 1/4 1/2 and 1 sec. I think that's Michael's point.
Is this the same M2 that recently had a new back door?

I am going to send it Youxin Yee and see what he can do with it......it's such a shame because I really like the camera but it has been giving me problems lately.....oh well, I guess that's just the way it goes.....

Open the camera back, look to a bright light. The shutter opens just a fraction. it is jammed, also the advance is jammed as the frames appear to be irregular. my advice: Give it a healtyhy tap against the table, if it does not free up /a piece if film dropping out. take it to a service guy. I once had this problem and the hefty knack against table was the remedy. Leica can take it, but can your ego ??

Hi Pete, it recently had a new film pressure plate, not a new back door.....but oddly enough, I was using a pristine back door from my M3 for this trip and I have used the M3 back door in the past (when the M2 film pressure plate was being replaced) and I have never had problems.....

I agree with everybody above, it needs to be serviced....I just hope it can be fixed and it stops giving me problems......

haha, excellent advice, I would love to slam it against a table but it is also having focusing problems too, so I think I will just send it in.....

The camera body is at least 45 years old, but I think Youxin Yee should take a closer look at your M2 before shipping it "again" halfway round the world.
His prices seem very competitive, but recent RFF posts will certainly make me think twice before sending him one of my cameras.

The sudden nature of the failure seems to indicate a piece of material, broken off film chips perhaps, have gotten into the shutter tracks.

I just triple checked for film chips....I held the camera up to a light source, took off the back door and ran through all the shutter speeds numerous times.....I also looked for loose film pieces or anything else that shouldn't be in there, and I couldn't see/find anything abnormal.......

the sounds at 15 at 30 really sound strange compared to the different shutter speeds.....I do not like sending my camera half way around the world, but I think that is what I am going to do......I am contemplating shooting a roll tomorrow and get it developed at a one hour lab and see whats up.....but I sort of lost confidence in my M2 now, and that's not a good feeling......

You might try the TV shutter speed trick and see if that indicates anything. It will show you pretty clearly if a curtain is dragging or the speeds between them are different, so you get an idea of why you're getting the effects you're getting.
