I just finished fixing up my new $50 wonder from Gero and shot a test roll. I am very impressed. It is the smooothest camera I have ever used. The focusing is a dream with the built in magnification. It is smoother than a nice Leica IIIf I was considering. There are two drawbacks. The first it is too nice to use. The second is that is is slightly longer than Leicas and FED1s.

I patched the curtains. The pinholes are gone! I used some very thin shutter cloth that I got by mistake for my FEDs. It was too thin for the FEDs. As three small peices glued to curtain with pliobond, it does not seem to slow the shutter. My test roll showed no more pinholes!

The slow shutter speeds are a little bit long. They seem to be speeding up a bit after some exercising.

I also realigned the RF and put a trim ring over the RF port. I had an old one in my camera parts box. It is a bit big, so I'll try Frank's suggestion of the one from my FED2.

Congratulations on getting this excellent camera. I shot today my first roll with a Canon IVSB, and I will soon know if all is fine or not.

Congratulations! The Canon IV is a very sweet camera - I found it much more pleasant to use (between the VF and the spring loaded spool and the other improvements ) than the original. Have fun!

I just took a look at the roll of film taken with the Canon IVsb and there seems to be a problem with the shutter speeds. The speed is correct for 1/100 but not fort other speeds. I may have to get the camera CLA'd.

Raid,

Have you tried exercising the shutter a few dozen times at the problem speeds?

Also, I have read that Canon IV RFs won't have proper shutter timing if the slow speed dial is not set to the highest value when using the faster speeds. I think I saw it in a Canon manual.

~~edit~~ I just checked, page 4 of my Canon IV manual ~~edit~~

Good luck,
Lance

Canon IV looks sooo cool

Canon IV looks sooo cool

I just put my J-12 on my Canon along with my Canon 35mm viewfinder. It looks so cool! It is the coolest looking camera setup I have!

I just hope I can take pictures with it that look half as good as the camera.

Oh, yeah, the J-12 & a Canon IV just have that groove... 😎 Not really sure why; it's easy to think only the Serenar's would work that way, but the J-12 looks really good as does a nice J-8. In lower light I used to just keep the camera on 1.5 for ease of focusing and then quick framed with the external finder. That adjustable magnification was a delightfull advance by Canon.

Love my J-12 on my Canon 7 too. Nice and compact package... 😀

Lance,
Thanks for this very useful tip. I have just loaded the camera with another roll of film, and this time I will pay attention to each photo taken to figure out if there is need of a CLA or not. Yes, a Canon RF camera looks very cool indeed.

Lance,
I'm impressed that you're willing/able to do the work your self on this! I was too chicken to attempt some work on my Zorki 3m and that was a mistake. My Canon will be going off for a CLA and I have better expectations about turn around time and very little worry about the quality of the work.
There are now three "new" IV-sb cameras here--we'd best be careful or the prices will go up! 😀
I didn't do quite so well as you $wise but I very happy with the one I got!

Rob,

I am very cheap sometimes. I destroyed one FED5 just to learn how to take a camera aprt and put it back together. I now have a shoebox labeled FED5! 🙂

I learned that playing with and rebuilding cameras is fun! It was great fun setting up my FED2 to use my Canon 0.95. The best part is, when I patch my shutter curtains myself, I can use the camera the next day!

Congratulations on your new camera.

p.s. I think your avatar is great! Please don't tell me it was an accident. I would be very disappointed to hear that.

Thanks, Lance! No the shot I'm using was not an accident. New Year's eve I worked and after I got out of the kitchen, I stayed late where I work. Had some focusing fluid with some friends, one of whom had their latest digi-whatever. I asked to borrow it for a minute and stood on a barstool and took three or four shots of the crowd. Then set the camera to its lowest shutter speed and turned off the flash.
I wasn't exactly sure what I would get but I did hope for something like what I captured.
The hard part was convincing the woman who owns the camera to NOT delete it.
Here is the bigger version.
